Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many books does LO have?

I feel like his collection is getting bigger and bigger (which is great) but I feel like we read the same dang books over and over again.

Also, any book suggestions would be cool. I feel like a lot of what he has are baby books, I want more "toddler" stories. If that makes sense

Re: How many books does LO have?

  • way too many books to count!  the bookshelf is exploding...and has totally overflowed into the playroom.

  • I am a teacher so I have about 1000 books for LO. I have been building a library for him for about 6 years. As for toddler books, any board book they offer are great. Also, all books that have real photographs in them. Just objects with colored backgrounds really grab toddlers' attention. Amazon has 100s of board books... some that have flip ups and silly stories. The shorter the better.

  • I ask this question all the time for the same reasons :)

Poke A Dot: Old MacDonalds Farm- he is starting to do it on his own
Hand Hand Fingers Thum- doesnt really care for it
Sheep in a Jeep- likes it
First 100 words- I thought it would be too busy for him but he loves flipping the pages and ive caught him staying on a page hes more familiar with
Mr. Brown Can Moo can you
    Belly Button Book

    He LOVES:

I love you stinky face (def his favorite book)
    Moo BAA LA LA
    Lets dance little pookie

  • Here we have about 30-40, all Dr. Seuss and from when I was a kid.  My mom's house has all the Disney books from my childhood.

I recommend Dr. Seuss of course, and Theo LeSeig, which is also Dr. Seuss.

eta:  We also have a bunch of board books that we bought from the thrift store.  They all look brand new and only cost $0.25 each.

Really, the shorter the better? I was thinking longer stuff to read at bedtime, not quick ones we read in 30 seconds. He seems to sit through longer ones. I trust you as a teacher to enlighten me on this. Obviously he's not reading them nor would be for a while... But he likes to listen. For some reason he's the only person in the world who likes my reading/singing voice ;)

  • Thanks for all the titles. People are asking what to get LO for his bday, not that I'll tell them which book to buy, I will tell them books.

And will get him myself as well!

  • Tons. Instead of buying anymore we hit the library once a week & pick up 5 or so books a week. It gives us variety w/out spending money. I also hit the B&N for their clearance books or get some when the school has a fundraiser. I'm a huge fan of reading so even if we have too many I'm cool w/ that.

  • My mother is an elementary school teacher and has also been collecting books for a few years. DS has several hundred because of this. His favorites are ones that are somewhat interactive. They have flaps that he can open, textures to feel, etc.. I think that books like those grab his attention more than his others. With every page that I turn to he seems to get excited to see what is under this flap or feel the fluffy fur of the animal. His absolute favorite book is Dinosaur's Binkit by Sandra Boynton.
  • LO loves those books with flaps to open and stuff, but he'll rip the flaps off and say, "oops. Eli do. Momma fix."

  • We have a lot but we definitely still read the same ones over and over.  They have favorites and from what I've read that is very common.

Most of our favorites are by Sandra Boynton:  Moo Baa LaLaLa, Hippos Go Berserk, Barnyard Dance...  I know them all by heart...sigh.

  • I'm not sure how many we have, maybe 50-60ish? Either way, I feel like we are always reading the same ones, but that's because DS LOVES to read. We read a minimum of 10/day (5 before bed, and then he wants to read those same 5 the following morning while he drinks his milk).

He is really into Mo Willems books, the pigeon ones and elephant and piggy. They are longer and even though he probably doesn't "get" the ending of most of them, he adores them and always wants to read them.

  • we probably have around 150, dd LOVES books and we read at least 3-4 every night. She really loves series books, like the little critter, bernstein bears, and franklin series. She also loves robert munsch books. I try to stay away from the short little board books, dd loves stories and is able to follow them, so I try to encourage that.

  • DD has tons of books. She has my entire collection of baby/toddler/kid books from when I was growing up, and we buy more for her when they're on sale. You can never have too many. I love Sandra Boynton, Robert Munsch, Dr. Suess, Shel Silverstein, Roger Hargreaves, and Eric Carle. Some of my favourite collections are the Berenstein Bears, Franklin, and Little Critter. I also love Mother Goose and Beatrix Potter.
  • Probably around 75 or so.  About half of them were books my mom had saved from when I was little.  I get bored reading the same things, so I go to the library every two weeks and stock up on books there.  We read three a night before bed.

  • I'd say about 100.

LO really loves "If You Give a Dog a Donut" and "Good Night America"

  • DD loves anything Boynton (if we pull out Snoozers before bed she will demand that we do Silly Lullaby), The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, Time for Bed by Mem Fox, and The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland are some of her other favourties right now (but they change weekly it seems).

  • Getting close to 100+, but he got a ton for his birthday and Christmas to build up the library.
  • My daughter loves the Usborne lift the flap books (Trains, Diggers, Farms) and we read them all the time.  There is a lot of detail in the pictures (not much story) so we discuss the page, sing songs about whats on the page, find things (like butterflies) - she can't get enough. She also likes Spot lift the flap books https://www.amazon.com/Spots-Big-Lift-Flap-Book/dp/0142400831 but she is starting to tear off the flaps.  She also loves the Gruffalo and a few others that were previously mentioned.

We do read the same books again and again but going to the library helps mix it up. We have about 30 books and it will gradually grow but we have a small house and I can't imagine where we would stick 1000 books!

  • DS has about 60 or so.  I pick up a lot in the dollar bins at Target.  I plan on going to the local library next month.  They host a used book sale, where all books are only .25.

  • We have at least 100 and both of my kids have their favorites that they only want to read over and over again.

We have also been making weekly trips to the library, where I take out 2 or 3 books for each of them and after they've read them all week long, we bring them back and switch them out for something else. It breaks up the same old, same old...

  • My LO doesn't have the patience for the length of Dr. Suess yet, but here are her current favorites:

Animal Alphabet: Slide and Seek the ABC's (best book for church ever!)

    Dear Zoo

    Brown Bear, Brown Bear

    Llama llama red pajama

    Barnyard Dance

  • He has a couple of dozen but about a third aren't board books so he doesn't get them yet. We just got him the Backyardigans numbers, letters, and colors books. It was a close call between that and Wonder Pets. Of course, he doesn't want any of those. He likes a book about baby animals where you get to feel the fur and stuff, and another called 10 Tiny Babies, where you start with one baby doing something and "along comes another and ..." His fave used to be Night Night SS but one of the dogs got it and it is no more.

  • I'm guessing we have a few hundred books. And I'm always looking for good deals on more.

    J. loves Sandra Boynton books. He's also getting into longer books, like I wish that I had Duck Feet (which I don't like, but whatever) and The Foot Book.

FWIW, I like having some longer non-board books and board books for the variety. He's most likely to amuse himself with the board books. But I prefer reading the longer ones generally.

  • Too many to count.  Right now, she LOVES Brown Bear (Brown Bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me.), and this book of Native American art that my MIL bought for her (Good morning salmon, swimming in the stream.).
