Hair Dye

So I am looking to save money and considering doing my hair myself...I am scared to death...I have dark brown hair. Has anyone ever done their own before and been happy with the outcome? Am I crazy to even try? If you have done it and were happy what brand and color did you do and please share any tips or tell me I am crazy :)

Re: Hair Dye

  • I use dye out of a box all the time.  I usually love the results.  I use Clairol permanent dye (a burgundy or an auburn color) when I do it.  If you have a lot of hair, I'd get 2 boxes because you don't want it to be spotty and you definitely want a lot of coverage.  Since you say you have dark brown hair, you can only go darker without having to bleach your hair.  Is that what you're planning on doing?  Or are you trying to just cover highlights/grey/whatever?  It's totally easy and I do recommend it.  :)

  • Ditto Joyco......it's super easy, depending on what you want to do.  What's your goal?  If it's to go darker and/or cover gray, you almost can't mess it up.  Going lighter isn't something you can easily do at home, nor would I ever be brave enough to try it.  If you're that nervous, get the demi-permanent kind (lasts 28 washes).  That's what I normally do anyway, and it's pretty fool-proof.  And it doesn't usually require professional help if you hate it.  Stick out tongue

  • I use Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color for dark hair and I love it! I have dark brown hair, but I like a bit of red to it. I get good grey coverage and overall color.  I use Auburn Black in the winter and Medium Tint Auburn in the summer (more red).

  • I use Loreal Sublime Mousse and loooove it. It goes on so easy and doesn't fade. My problem is that I'm just lazy and don't color it often enough - once every 3-4 months, so I have a ton of gray by the time I do it again. I also do dark dark brown and love the #30 shade (Pure Darkest Brown).

  • Thank you ladies. Yes, I am just looking into covering up grey hair.
