I know I don't post much here... but I could use some T&P for Tegan

Over the weekend I noticed that Tegan had gotten a small pimple at the top of her right buttock. It seemed to be bugging her a little bit (as one would imagine) and so I put a dab of Vaseline on it during diaper changes. Anyway, by last night, the pimple had a nasty looking puss head and there was some redness spreading around the pimple. I did some googling and some asking of friends and figured out that we were probably dealing with a staph infection.

So, of course, we headed to the doctor first thing this morning. I knew we'd be looking at some topical antibiotic and probably oral as well, but I wasn't expecting what happened. They had to lance and drain the sore because of the amount of puss that appeared to present under the sore. Ugh! I have a feeling that this morning will always rate right up there with my top 5 hardest mommy moments. They numbed it a bit with a cream, but it did not do much and Tegan cried and cried.

Anyway, now we have to clean it twice a day, put some antibiotic cream on it and keep it covered. She's also taking an oral antibiotic. On Wednesday, we take her back to the doctor and if the wound has closed and built up more puss, she'll be on her way to see a surgeon to have it surgically lanced.

We could really use some postitive "heal on it's own and not need surgery" vibes, prayers, dust, etc. I'd appreciate it more than I could say.

  • Ouch!  I hope it heals quickly and there is no more lancing. Good luck!
  • T&P that it heals easily and she isn't too uncomfortable.

FWIW, I've had something similar done and I *highly* recommend seeing a dermatologist if it comes up again. I don't know the difference with kids and adults, but my derm did one numbing shot, waited for it to take effect, and then numbed the rest. It was uncomfortable, but not terrible. I've had it done with two different OB's and one did the cream and one did one numbing shot and those are the most painful experiences of my life, including the births of my kids.

Ugh! It kills me to hear this. Tegan didn't scream, but she definitely cried hard and was very upset. She's a tough cookie and my new hero. The pedi talked to us about the lidocaine shots, but was worried that after the pain of the shots, Tegan would really fight us on the lancing. She felt that using the numbing cream and then lancing would make her less likely to fight us and she'd be better able to drain the sore. I don't know... I'm just relieved that if they do have to do something else, it'll be under general anesthesia.

  • Poor girl!  That sounds exactly like what DD had a few weeks ago but on her chin.  Started as a pimple, started leaking pus and within a week was an extreme red, crusty rash across her face.  Doc called it impetigo and it cleared up with antibiotics.  No lancing!

    Hope it heals quickly!

  • I'm sorry :(  The problem with lidocaine is that it stings going in. I can understand why they didn't want to give her one large dose. That's why it's great to do one small one, then all you feel after that is pressure. I'm sure it's still uncomfortable for her, but it usually gets better really quickly, at least in my experience. Hopefully she doesn't have to have anything else done!
  • My BFF had to deal with recurring staph with her daughter on her bottom too, and it was a pain.  I hope she's all better soon!
  • T&P for your little girl!
  • DD had staph a couple weeks ago. They has to drain one on her thigh and she down right screamed. We did the anti-biotics and warm compresses and has gotten better. Hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick.
  • Oh no, poor baby! I hope it is nothing, lots of T&P to your family and hugs to you, Mama.
  • Poor baby! Lots of dust for her.
  • Poor girl. Dust for her and you.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Poor baby!  And poor mommy!  I hope it heals on it's own!
  • Poor thing! Lot's of dust that it heals on its own. Let me know if you need anything.
  • Oh So sorry! I hope she feels better! Hang in the mommy! I am sure that was hard to see her go through that. Tons of good vibes, dust, Yaya dance for you!

  • I hope it gets better! My ds had one on his foot once the doctor lanced and drained it at his office and then it closed up later. It was a nightmare I had to soak his foot 3x a day (he was 18m at the time). We did finally go to the surgeon to have him drain it and it was so much easier there then at the doctors. The surgeon sees this stuff all the time and was less concerned about it and everything seemed to go smoother there. Good luck!

  • Awww, poor thing. :(

I really hope it gets better!
