TTC after 35

BFP. But, I'm worried. I'd like your opinion. (long)

I  posted on Sunday that after being a  day late I tested even though that morning I had red on my TP.  It was definately not what I consider spotting.  It was looking like the start of AF for sure.  The test I used was the dollar store version, which I've never used before, and it was BFN.  I did see the slightest pink after maybe 15 minutes which I've heard is from evaporation.   By the afternoon all traces of AF was gone and nothing all day Monday.  Then, Monday night I had a terrible stomach ache.  I do get these sometimes from gas/constipation frequently.  However this time the pain was the worst very low, and centered over my pelvic bone.  I took a couple gas-x, did some yoga poses, and about 2 hours later it was gone.  While it lasted the pain was bad enough that I was starting to wonder if I was going to have go to an ER.

So this morning, still seeing no AF I took another dollar store test.  It says BFP.  Instead of being happy I feel worried.  I had bleeding two days ago, terrible low and centered pains last night.  No stomach pains this morning.  DH says I'm over reacting.

Honestly, would you be worried?  Would you make a Dr. appt?  If not now, would you make a Dr. appt if you have another stomach ache?  I know from my first pregnancy (I have 5 year old identical twins) the Dr. didn't want to see me until I was at least 8 weeks.  If I made a Dr. appt now, for a stomach ache that is gone, what could they even check out for me at this point?

  • You might try the ladies on the pregnant over 35 board to see if they have any other advice for you. But if it were me I would ask to speak to the nurse at my OB/Gyn's office for advice and peace of mind. Congrats!

  • I'm a newbie (not an expert by any means). So I would probably ask for a beta blood test to check HCG and progesterone levels just for peace of mind and to be sure you don't need any progesterone suppositories or anything.

  • I'd call your doc.  Your BFP is great news, but I would want to let a doc know about the tiny bit of blood you saw and more specifically about the pelvic pain.  They may not think these are things to check out, but they may also want to investigate to ensure it's not an ectopic.

  • Congrats on your BFP. I think it never hurts to call your doctor if you are worried. With my son, I had lots of spotting and mild cramping before and after my BFP. They had me come in for an u/s at 5 weeks where all I saw was a tiny sac in my uterus. It sort of put my mind at ease, but I wasn't able to fully relax until I saw the h/b at 8 weeks. I think you just need to brace yourself for a long couple of weeks until you can see a h/b (usually around 6 weeks). Try to relax and stay positive!

If the pain returns, I'd call the doc just in case it is ectopic.  If you have no pain right now, I'd wait it out because they won't be able to see anything yet.  Good luck and congrats!

  • Congrats on your BFP!

the spotting could have been implantation bleeding, which would also explain why you had a BFN that morning. Call your doc and schedule your first appointment. If it would ease your mind, ask to speak to a nurse regarding the unusual pains.

  • Congrats!  If it were me, I would definitely be making a call but also be celebrating a little.. I hope you get some good news from your doctor!

  • Congrats on your BFP!!!

Spotting and cramping can occur during a normal pregnancy.

Rule of thumb is to call your doctor if you have any red bleeding, just to be on the safe side. So, yes, I would call.

As PP said, it is likely too early for them to see anything (usually can't see anything on ultrasound until hcg = around 1500).

Ectopic pregnancies are rare, but they do happen, so listening to your body is important.

    Married 4/12/08 DS born 11/17/2009 via c-section at 39 weeks. 11/12/2011 BFP #2!! m/c 7w5d. 2/28/2012 BFP #3 Beta #1-12dpo = 18; Beta #2-16dpo = 185; Beta #3-18dpo = 505. EDD 11/10/2012. Ectopic discovered at 5w4d. D&C followed by methotrexate.
  • At 12dpo I had some mild brownish spotting that was implantation spotting and I got my BFP at 14dpo. I had tested earlier at 10dpo and it was negative.

A few days after I got the BFP I started having mild cramps, similar to menstrual cramps, but no more bleeding. Some women so experience ongoing spotting or mild bleeding though, so don't get too worried yet. There are a few conditions that cause bleeding during pregnancy and usually they don't affect the growing fetus.

If you got a BFP I suggest you call the doctor and go get a blood test to confirm. If you get a positive on the blood test, just try to relax and wait until your 8 week appointment. It was very hard for me to wait but the 8 week mark is perfect b/c you can already see a sac and a little bean and you hear the heartbeat. A lot of women cause themselves a lot of grief by going to an appt before 8 weeks because most of the time you can't hear a h/b or see a fetus that early.

I hope your pregnancy goes well, best of luck and keep us posted! Smile

Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • Thanks guys.  I guess that I'll hang tight for now, but I'll definately go in to the doctor right away if I have any more bleeding or pain.

     Thank you for your well-wishes!
