Very random thing.
For over a year now (2 years? 3 years? it has been forever!) some idiot in California has been signing up *my* main email address for all sorts of random things: colleges, favorite stores, her congressional representative, etc. At the beginning I even received a copy of her paycheck stub. With that one, I immediately informed the company they sent it to the wrong address and that one has never been seen again.
While I go about unsubscribing all the time, thanks to this lovely person my e-mail is now FULL of spam ALL the time. Really. My address used to be clean and happy.
So, the idiot is apparently looking for a job now and has signed up for lots of job search sites, and I FINALLY have access to her address and phone number.
What should I do now? call her? send a ton of junk mail to her home address in spite? Just ignore and realize that I can just keep deleting the spam? I'd e-mail her, but , you know, I'd just get it...
Re: A strange WWYD
That is so weird. How can she not realize that she's doing this?
I'm not sure what I'd do. Honestly I'd probably just change my email address.
Same thing happened to DH. He replied to the sender if it wasn't spam for awhile but now just deletes it all.
Especially for the job stuff now i really just don't get it either. I mean, it isn't big time jobs or anything -- one thing is for Ross in Chula Vista CA -- so I have questioned her intelligence often.
But it drives me BONKERS.
Her maiden name is apparently the same as my married name.
I would change email, but that is the one consistent thing I have since I move fairly often and I've changed phone numbers, etc. it's my name and it is easy! I guess my email address is more important to me than the spam.

WTF? So, wait ... is she using completely the wrong email address (with her maiden name)? And she's, what? So stupid she doesn't know she's using the wrong address again and again and again? WTF? I'd call her and give her a piece of my mind.
Yea, I don't get it either. Definitely call her! (especially since you don't want to change your addy)
i would call her and let her know that she is putting the wrong email address. she probably doesn't even realize it and if she's applying for jobs it'd be good for her to know that she'll never hear back. or you could even just text her if you don't want to have to talk to her.
DH's aunt and i have the exact same name and she puts my email as hers all the time. she lives in IL and i'm constantly getting email from chicago places. of course its different since i know her, but i still tell her every time that she put my email address again.
This exact same thing has happened to me with multiple people! I have some guy in Ireland who has signed up for all these apps (including his iTunes account) with my email, and a guy in Chicago who gives my email for all of his house stuff - realtor, car dealership (I even now know what he drives), repair companies, etc. Plus, there's a lady who is always emailing me things she means for her husband in CA, even though I always reply that she's made a mistake. I even got their mortgage documents once!
I would call. I'm sure it's just an honest (albeit stupid) mistake. Of course, then there's the chance that she'll start using your phone number too....I'm a little paranoid that way.
I'm a spiteful person, but I would request a new password for the job site she's using and change it - since they send it to the email address listed..
Then I might call...but probably not.
This is funny only b/c a similar thing kept happening to me!! Only mine wasn't spam stuff (thank goodness), just personal stuff. I *finally* figured out that someone had typed her email address wrong (my address) and people kept replying all & using the same contacts list. I figured out her correct email addy (it was in the body of one of the emails!), emailed her & explained the sitch & have stopped getting 99% of the emails.
Sorry you're being subjected to spam. What a PITA! I think I'd try to contact her & nicely ask her to stop. If that doesn't work, I'd be super tempted to go the spite route.
Something similar has happened to me, except it's not just one person, it's at least 4. I finally figured out that these people have email addresses very similar to mine, and it's the g m a i l system that's misdirecting them. I contacted the customer service, and they basically told me "Sorry, that happens, you should've have put a period in your email address."
Like, say my email address is: my.email @ g.com
Well, I receive email intended for: myemail @ g.com and my_email @ g.com (etc.)
It got annoying enough that I barely use that email address any more. I tried to keep on top of it, telling people they had the wrong person, etc., but it never worked. I even sent a real mail letter to one of the other "same name as me" ladies, and never heard anything back or stopped receiving their info. I got copies of leases, job rejection letters, family reunion-type stuff, and so on for these other ladies. Now, I tend to just delete pretty quickly and assume that the intended recipient also has one or more other email addresses (like me) and will shift to those as their primary.
I'd make a valid attempt to notify the person (letter), and from there delete delete delete.

Two of my email accounts have gone through something similar. I got a job offer for one guy, which I called and respectfully declined because I have no experience or interest in being a city planner. Pay was good, though. I've even gotten some fun emails from his ex wife.
In the beginning, I'd make an honest effort to respond to personal communications (the job offer, the ex) to let them know that they'd been given the wrong address and to not send email to *my* address anymore. I hoped that the constant nagging of ex wives and potential employers would be enough to get the dude to pay more attention to which address he was giving out and in any case, at least they not to send on anything. He did sign up for a myspace acct using my email address and I logged in, closed it, and reported it.
For the rest of the stuff, I just send it to spam and let it be.
