Hi ladies!
I'm 30 weeks today and we are in the middle of a bathroom renovation.
I myself am not involved in the reno at all - the hubby takes care of it with a few guys.
We are ripping the walls and the tiles...and installing a new bathtub.
I'm concerned about the dust from drywall and chemicals. Our house is pretty old and I read that old houses tend to have lead paintings. And what about aspestos...Our walls are completely exposed now and i can see the insulation. But our house was recently renovated (before we moved in), so i doubt the insulation has aspestos.
LIke I said, I'm not doing any renovation myself, but the bathroom is right beside my bedroom and I'm afraid i'm inhaling some toxic fumes while i'm sleeping...DH says it's completely fine and would probably get mad if i suggest sleeping somwhere else...
has anyone gone through a major renovation while pregnant? let me hear your thoughts on this...
Re: 30 weeks pregnant and bathroom renovation
We did a major bathroom overhaul in our main bathroom when I was about 26 weeks along. Our House was built in 1910 so also older. DH kept plastic up to reduce the dust that went into other areas of the house. I stayed away from the demo but was there and helped with the construction of the new bath. I wore a hefty mask/vetilator thing to keep amount of fumes I breathed in down.
So I would say you are fine. Have contractor or DH put up some plastic around the work area.
DH and I have two hobbies, running and renovating our old home. Last week we put up a tile backsplash in our kitchen. We ended up having to tear out drywall to have some electrical work done. You will know asbestos insulation if you see it. It's called vermiculite (sp?) and is in a million tiny pieces. If you find that I would not be in the house. We found it during one of our first renovations on accident, boo. Asbestos can also be in drywall and other building materials, you can google where you may have it and if it's safe to be around or not. But the rest of the stuff should be fine. I know I had to take DD out of the house when we were seling the grout and tile, just make sure to read the labels and follow the instructions. If you're keeping things well ventolated you shouldn't have to leave for a long period of time. or anything.
You are lucky to get a new bathroom! You'll have to post some pictures!
We are doing an extensive kitchen and bath reno --- changing the layout of all our spaces so plumbing and electrical need a lot of re-routing. Our house is uninhabitable right now, so we rented a furnished apartment nearby while all the work is going on.
I only go to the house about once a week to check on progress, DH is there more often. Our contractors have been great about keeping the mess to a minimum, but they can only do so much to control the dust.
I'm at 25 weeks and we are praying that the inspector okays our plumbing and electrical so that the contractor can start drywalling!
HI, wow I just went through the same thing at my house. My Dh and I decided we needed a new bathroom and w/ the nursery being renovated the bathroom was the last to be worked on. We completely demolished the old bathroom, we put everything else in new. We added a new tub, fixtures, sheetrock, walls , tiles for the floor and all. My DH worked on it mainly when I was out at work or running errands. We used an exhaust fan in the bathroom window to remove the excess dust. He cleaned up after he worked everyday to make sure there wasn't dust everywhere. He mop and wiped everything down too. It was more work than normal but he wanted to make sure it didn't spread all over the house. When he sanded he made sure the air was clear and used a mask and goggles at all times.
Just stay out of there unless you really need to go in. You should be fine. Keep the door closed at night as well that helped us alot.
We are about to renovate 2 bathrooms and wait for delivery.
Ordered equipment from https://www.ravak.com
It´s so nice, look forward to have it finished!
You will know if it's asbestos, if it looks like insulation, it's probably not asbestos. As PP state, vermiculite will be tiny pieces and not big chunks of fluff. Asbestos is still often found in many buildings and homes, my dad has been doing heating and air all his life and still often finds asbestos, I think people would be surprised at the amount of places that still have it. It becomes dangerous when people are working very closely with it, in very close and unventilated quarters, for long periods of time.
As far as lead paint, I would say the same thing, keep the house very well ventilated and don't spend a lot of time around the area that is being done. I would be more concerned about all of this if you already had LO (so that they can avoid the inevitable dust) but at 30 weeks pregnant, I would think you would be fine. I would ask your OB as well though, just to be sure.
