This is what I get for being the eager beaver yesterday morning...lol;)
So in honor of DD's birthday today--what was one of your best birthdays as a kid AND (yes this is a 2 parter) what is a tradition that you have started for your LO(s) on his/her birthday?
Re: QOTD Tuesday
Best Birthday: tie between the sleepover that I got to have for my 14th birthday (Mom and Dad even bought a new TV for the occasion...actually I think Dad just wanted an excuse to buy a new tv lol) and my 9th birthday when I got to go see ET with two of my BFFs (not dating myself there or anything...)
Birthday tradition: We haven't really started this yet because of the girls' ages, but I always got to pick out what we would have for dinner...and I didn't have to do my chores on my birthday...and I intend to do both of those things for our DDs. Yesterday someone told me that the whole family gets to have cupcakes in bed on the day of someone's birthday...I like that. I also like the idea of celebrating half birthdays...not in the same way as a regular bday, but still the idea of celebrating the half way point sounds fun to me:)
I don't remember many of them in detail but my overall memory is that I never had to do any chores on my birthday which was great and my mom always baked a cake and we celebrated as a family. Basically, my family always made me feel special.
I guess the most memorable one (probably because it was somewhat out of the ordinary) was the time I had my birthday in the summer and we went to a skating rink. My birthday is Dec 30 so it was fun to have a summer party for a change.
No kid yet, but I will answer for myself.
My best birthday was a Rollerblading party at a local park. I don't remember how old I was turning (maybe around 10?), but this was at the height of the Rollerblade craze. First, we painted waterbottles using nail polish and probably puffy paint. Then, we Rollerbladed around the huge paved trail, and then we had some kind of picnic lunch.
I have a summer birthday, so while it was sometimes hard to get people to come when we weren't in school, it did open the door to outdoor parties like that one.

I remember the year my grandpa bought me a bike and I rode for the 1st time. I don't remember how old I was...6 or 7 I guess. He wanted to put training wheels on but I said "no" and just rode it down the hill!
So far, I have taken off work for every b-day for the kids and I would like to do that at least until they are in school and spend the day just us (without the sibling) doing something fun.
Other ideas I read that I like include: making a pancake in the shape of the # that the kid is (i.e.: a 4-shaped pancake for 4th b-day), filling up the room with balloons overnight so that when the LO wakes up, the room is filled; letting the child pick out activities and places to eat on his/her day and having a party the weekend of or after the b-day. (I have not done any yet except the party).
best birthday: might be when i turned 5...you can't do that on television was out and i loved watching people get slimed. my parents clocked me with a whipped cream pie to the face and i thought it was the most hilarious thing ever. then i had a pool party wtih all my friends in the backyard!
birthday tradition: would have to be the cake...i've made pumpkin cake or cupcakes for each of T's birthdays (late fall birthday) and strawberry cupcakes for A's (late summer birthday). she's only had one birthday, but we made them the day she was born too, since we were already home!
I think my most memorable party was from when I was 6 or 7 and we had my birthday party in the airport control tower at Teterboro Airport. It was so cool meeting the real control tower folks, pilots and then playing on the equipment that was not in use.
As to traditions, we let the LOs choose their cake flavor, party theme, and dinner. I would like to do something special for DD when she turns three. Now that she is aware and remembers, I think it will be a great time to introduce some new traditions. I saw one were you create a pancake sundae for breakfast that I think might be neat. I love some of the other ideas here, definite food for thought.
My sixteenth birthday was the best. My friends threw me a surprise party and I was truly surprised.
For birthday traditions since his birthday has been on a weekday so far, he gets ice cream for breakfast. We do a cake on the weekend when we can invite guests.
I loved my sixteenth party. My parents went out and let us have the house to ourseleves for a while and it was all my best friends sleeping over.
We don't really have any special birthday traditions yet other than I go all out in crafting and baking for their parties. Since we have a family party on the weekend I don't make a big deal out of their actual birthday so they don't get confused - they get so excited about family coming to see them that they count down the days until they see the family as opposed to countdowns to their actual birthdays. This will probably change with maggie's 5th birthday since she can understand that now but I will probably still act like party day is the birthday for Molly this year since we will have to have it early due to Easter and then our vacation.
