2+ moms, please add your own...(I just remembered these two last night and I think it would be good for us to make a list.)
Your baby will startle easily and startle for no reason for several days after birth. We used to say Juliana looked like a Televangelist "Praising Jesus"
Your baby's eyes will roll all around in his/her head. Seriously, she/he will look in your general direction with one and at the other side of the room with the other until the muscles are built to give them control. Your pediatrician will tell you if you have cause to be concerned....do not freak.
I am sure I will think of more as time goes on...
Re: Your Newborn: The Weird Things Moms Forget (a guide for FTMs)
Newbs can get cradle cap ON THEIR FACE.
It can also fall off in pieces.
The big part of DD's fell of when she was about 3 weeks old but there was some residual stump way deep in her belly button that stayed in there and fell off in pieces for a long time.

Despite what you hear, some babies sleep. A LOT.
Mine did. There was no "sleep when the baby sleeps" because she slept SO MUCH that I couldn't possibly sleep that much. Most of it was ON ME so I didn't get much done. But yeah, she slept a lot.
And she was EBF.
Oh yeah! And I am a very firm believer in don't wake a sleeping baby. I never woke her to feed her and just pumped that stuff out
And then there are those that don't sleep that much! I couldn't believe how much my DS was awake.. and when he did sleep it would be for 20 minute clips (during the day - thankfully at night he did much better).
I was also going to bring up the lovely topic of baby acne. Poor guy had a pizza face from about 2 weeks old to 2 months. It's not pretty - but it passes.. and it's normal.. just mom's hormones running through his system.
Oh, yes.
When feeding your baby (or when they are sleeping in your arms) her eye lids may not shut all the way.
This is especially creepy when her eyes then roll back in her head and all you can see are the white parts.
My DD2 had that as well. It was gross. She had to had surgery to unclog it because it never got better.

On their face? thats insane!!
I thought it was dirt and I had a very dirty baby. But it kept coming back. At a routine doc appt, I learned it was cradle cap. Oops!
Anything else special about little boys?
All my girls were grunters....I couldn't sleep thinking there was something wrong with their chest or breathing. Nope, they are just loud and vocal. I survived the grunting by using binkies at night because it helped them from making all those sounds. I'm expecting a grunting baby this time too.
Lactating babies. It goes away on its own, but it is really freaky if you don't know it can happen.
Sometimes a baby can get a umbilical granuloma. Basically, it looks like a little bump of belly button sticking out. A pediatrician can take care of it in the office, but sometimes the kid ends up with a weird half-outie that will hopefully keep her from wearing skanky shirts in public. (Ask me how I know.)
We always kept some washcloths next to the changing station to throw over DS when changing him. It kept him from peeing on us or his face.
YOU CANNOT SPOIL BABIES! Despite what your great-grandma's aunts cousins nieces friend said, babies aren't spoiled by being held. The first three months are a very transitional time and it's perfectly normal for them to prefer to be held. Find a baby carrier like a moby or ergo or a ring sling or something, because it will help you feel more human, but go ahead and hold LO all the time.
At the exact same time, don't be afraid to put them down even if they'll cry. If you need a 5 minute shower to rinse off, take it. Maybe save the extended shower and shaving and hair washing for when someone else can hold LO, but a few minutes here and there is perfectly fine and it won't emotionally scar them or you.
I have stuffed up nose and this made me laugh so hard that I snorted and shot snot across the room!
Just wanted to add that baby boys can get swollen boobs too. (And so can early pubescent boys).
One of my boys actually grew pubic hair on his scrotum when he was two or three months old. It went away on it's own around 8 months old.
You are suppose to clean around there umbilical cord until it falls off. Really watch how the nurse does it in the hospital. I didn't realize how deeply you have to clean and DD's got all goopy because I wasn't cleaning it good enough. You can essentially put the entire cotton end of a Qtip down around the umbilical cord when cleaning it. That's the only way to get it entirely clean.
