Upstate NY Babies

Would you paint molding/baseboards?

The molding on the floor/baseboards is brown wood. They look terrible....paint marks, scuffs/chips from vacuum, etc. I think it would be a PITA to replace them all since they would have to be cut to fit.

Would you paint them white instead? Can they be painted and still look ok? All the molding around the windows is off white, but they need to be painted too. We don't have hardwoods and will likely replace carpet soon. The new nursery will need new carpet first, but we live in a ranch and I fear new carpet in just 1 room will look silly.

Thoughts?

Re: Would you paint molding/baseboards?

  • We painted the trim in both nurseries white and replaced the trim throughout our living area (LR, DR, kitchen, hallway, entryways) with white trim.  I love it!  it definitely shows the dust more but I just clean it when I'm cleaning the floors.

ETA: We have laminate hardwood floors in our living area & hallway, tile in our entryways, and carpet in the bedrooms.

  • Some of the baseboards and molding in our house is painted white and I like it. Plus, nothing like a fresh coat of paint to brighten something up on the cheap!

  • It depends on what kind of finish is on the molding on what kind of paint you can use.  There are different grades of molding, wood molding that can be stained like yours is much more expensive than white trim molding that is meant to be painted.
  • We painted all of the baseboards and trim when we bought our house. We figured we were giving the walls a facelift, we'd give those things some help, too. They were pretty beat up, so the paint helped a lot. Eventually I'd like to replace all of it because we've had some work done in different parts of the house and needed to put in new wood.

I'd just go room by room as you have time. You'll love the difference.

  • All of the basebords and molding are painted in our house.. I usually choose a contrasting color to the walls, and in a few places, we just use a neutral cream/white.

    I love it!

  • Ha, I just wrote this in the cleaners post. Ours certainly looked good when we bought the house - very clean and fresh looking. Unfortunately it really shows the dirt. I'm sure if we didn't have Abby, it wouldnt be a problem. But it is constantly dirty and my most dreaded cleaning job - down on my hand and knees with a magic eraser. But maybe it is also the type of paint they used like pp said? Ours is not glossy.
  • We did in Ryan's room and I love it.  I say go for it.
