s/o buying homes, I'd super love y'all's feedback.

We are looking for a house. Our limit is $250,000, and I'd be happier to stay around $200,000. Before we started looking seriously, I was down on the 'burbs, HOAs, and cookie-cutter housing. But the last few week of serious looking has been a reality check- living in a 1930s bungalow or mid-century charmer in South Central or North Loop is not feasible. I've become way more open to suburban living. 

DH works on 360, south of Bee Caves. Where I will work next year is still up in the air. We're thinking about the Y area, because it seems sorta funky in a good way. RR is just too far from his job, and the girls' grandparents live South. So we're more inclined, though not adamant, to be south.

Any recommendations, advice, warnings? I'm wide open. TIA!

    The Grenada Hills subdivision is great. There's also a lot of good stuff in the Wm Cannon/ Escarpment area.

    I really like SW Austin and I think you can find a lot of great, afforable housing.

    cuernavaca? its a bit farther out west of 360, but it's funky and i think still relatively affordable (i haven't checked in awhile). we considered it, but way too far for my DHs work. i have friends who live out there and LOVE it. they have lake austin access too which is awesome. and eanes schools.

    Yeah, I'm thinking the area around Escarpment is our best bet. 

    Say, I've heard you raise concerns about AISD. Are you at liberty to say why? I've heard rumblings from others too, IRL, and I was just wondering if there were policies specific to AISD that should make me consider RR or DS ISDs.

    cuernavaca is in westlake, an old eclectic lake neighborhood.  there is some affordable stuff out there but it feels less like a community to me for some reason.  we've gone back and forth on it over the years :)  our taxes were going to be higher there as well.

    i think you have a lot of options though!

    We rented in 78733 (Cuernavaca) for two years before buying in Cedar Park.  There are some advantages to our cookie cutter CP neighborhood, definitely, but i MISSED 78733

    Although it's less "formal" of a community, we knew most of our neighbors and many had young kids.  It's Eanes, which is great.  Downtown is easy to get to.  The scenery for the drive is gorgeous.  We went into Bee Cave for our target trips, etc.  It's growing out there a lot. There are activiies for kids, live music, etc. at the galleria all the time.  Whole Foods is coming!  Some streets/areas are nicer than others (typical of a non-HOA regulated).  Some streets/areas are yucky.  They have a community park with a nice pool.  There is also a little beach there on Lake Austin but it's COLD and you can launch a boat.

    Bluestreet, if you know my name (we are fb friends), my DH posted a screenshot from one of their websites today and I commented.  It's crap like that, that we've come across all year long, from every level, that makes me want to go elsewhere.  DS goes to an "exemplary" school and his teacher can't even send grammatically correct correspondence, printed or emailed, home.  Being sweet only goes so far when you are supposed to be teaching my kid.  We are only in Kinder, so we haven't had to deal with any real issues yet, but I'm already afraid regarding the quality of education.  Anyway, this is probably for another post.

    I don't know if it's still the case, but Cuervnavaca (sp?) used to have a shady reputation because of the number of registered child offenders that lived there.  

    I hear ya too, AustinAggie01.  One of the reasons why we are doing a university model school.  

    Buestreet--share your house hunting experience on the boards!  (Are we FB friends?) Since we're also looking potentially SW, I'd love to see what you find out.
