Trying to Get Pregnant

super personal Q for those brave enough to answer...

I can't believe I am actually asking this and I would appreciate any serious responses. My periods have become irregular lately and I have been worried about the possibilities about PCOS. I have a doctor appt and go in on Feb 1st. but am a little embarrassed to ask the gyno about this. I know with PCOS you can have excess hair.......well am just wondering if anyone else has some hair around their areola?? It is not a lot and I wouldn't consider it an excess amount of hair but I guess if other women don't have any then it could be????? If I knew that other women had this as well then I wouldn't feel the need to bring it up to the doc but if not then I will. DH doesn't even notice it but it is just a few hairs that I usually pluck when I notice themEmbarrassed I should also mention that I have had them for years and I never worried about it until now that my periods have gone a little crazy. I even had them when I conceived both of my boys so I am wondering if it can be normal for a woman to have a few hairs there?

I am really embarrased to ask this so please spare me....

Re: super personal Q for those brave enough to answer...

  • Yes I think it is normal, some women are more hairy than others. I occasionally have a few "rouge" hairs. Just pluck and move on. Ask your doctor if you are really concerned but I don't think there is any cause to be.

  • I have light hairs and occasionally a rogue darker one.  When that happens I pluck.  I also get a random dark hair near my belly button that gets plucked.  I think most women get random hairs.

Sorry if that isn't much help, but no need to feel embarrassed!

  • I'll brave it. I have regular cycles and no indication of PCOS.  Yes, I've found a few strays.  I pluck them in an instant, shudder, and then pretend that I never ever, ever saw them there.

  • That's definitely not something to be embarrassed about asking. I guess I'm lucky not to be in that boat, but someone posted something similar a few months back and there were tons of women who responded that they had body hair in unusual places. I remember a few saying the same thing about their areolas.  I'm am trying to find the thread and will link it if I can track it down.

ETA: I'm sure you're going to get plenty of responses to your post but here's the thread:

  • I have a few stray dark hairs by my belly button that I pluck every once in a while.
  • Don't be embarrassed. I have PCOS and I would not consider that excess hair growth, especially if it is not coarse. Now if you had coarse upper lip hair or chin hair then it could be a sign of excess androgens (male hormones), which is common in PCOS.

  • I agree it's totally normal. I have PCOS and have a few hairs around my nipples, but nothing over the top. I wouldn't be worried.

  • I have PCOS and excess hair :/ I have to wax under my chin and my throat...i have a couple of stray ones around my areola too, but have had those for years. Some women with PCOS don't have any excess hair, but it wouldn't hurt to ask the Dr. about it when you ask about PCOS.

  • totally normal! I think a lot of woman get a stray hair here and there.

If you are overly concerned you could make mention to dr. but I think you are fine to pluck and keep it moving. GL on your journay!

  • I thought I had issues as I have some dark hair around my breasts - all over them, not just around the areola and I have to pluck regularly.  I also have a lot of hair between my belly button and pelvic area.  I had my testosterone levels tested because of this a long time ago and everything was normal.

  • Pretty normal.  The hair that you would need to worry about is any excessive hair growth on the face (usually in the pattern of male hair growth) such as hair on the neck/throat, chin, and side of face.  There can also be hair growth on your chest but in the middle of it between the breasts as well as excessive hair growth around your belly between, on your stomach, and below the belly button.  I have PCOS and I have hair growth on my face, neck/throat, chest, and belly button (dark, coarse).  The higher levels of testosterone and androgen are what causes the hair growth.  A few around your nipples are normal.

    Yup this. :)

  • I do think that some people just have more body hair than others and it could be completely normal - however, combined with the irregular periods, I think it's a good idea to bring up to your doctor. When I was diagnosed with pcos I had never even heard of pcos, and one of the diagnostic questions the doctor asked was if I have hair on my nipples. As others have mentioned, the coarseness of the hair is also an indicator.

  • Mention it to your doctor.  Don't be embarrassed, they deal with much worse.  If you do think you have PCOS, hair growth is one symptom and they should know and most likely they'll tell you it's nothing to worry about.

  • I've never been diagnosed with PCOS but have hair EVERYWHERE! I have to wax 1-2x a month on my face. And yes I have boobie hair too that I just shave while in the shower, not a ton but there's definitely a few. Nothing to worry about.

    This exactly!

A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.

Even though it's a sign, don't go solely by this though.

I've had to get waxed every two weeks since 1996...  I seriously don't think I have PCOS.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying here. I didn't say if she had excess hair she definitely had PCOS I said she could. I'm well aware of the symptoms of PCOS, as I have all of them and was diagnosed in 2008.
