sidecarring the crib and bedtime routines

Hi there,

We've decided to go ahead and side car Baby's crib.  Right now he bedshares with me but this means that my husband is in another room on an air mattress.  He is a big man, has sleep apnea and is a heavy sleeper so the three of us bedsharing isn't really a safe or comfortable option.  He's not giving me a hard time about not sleeping in his bed but I'm really starting to feel like we're housemates (even when the baby was in the Arm's Reach DH was in another room because he didn't have a CPAP machine yet and I couldn't wear earplugs to keep the snoring out due to needing to hear the baby).  We've tried using a PNP in the room with us but he won't sleep in it except for short naps, whereas when he bedshares he just reaches for me, nurses a bit, and then falls back asleep.  Trying to get him to sleep in a crib or PNP is just an exercise in frustration and I won't let him CIO.  Bedsharing is enjoyable and I can function at work the next day.

Anyway...we have a Hensvik crib from IKEA, so the sides are a bit lower than most cribs.  I'm not worried about this when I'm in bed but I wonder what other sidecar parents do in terms of bedtime routine.  I don't feel it will be safe for him to be in the side car unattended until I decide to go to bed (even with a monitor...he's going to be mobile enough soon that he could flip out before I can get up the stairs).

Do you all just go to bed early with the baby or do you try to start them out in an enclosed space like a PNP until you go to bed?  Once he starts sleeping more than 45 minutes without waking up it'd be nice to spend some time with DH but not at the expense of Baby's safety.  Just wondering what other parents do.  I did think about just trying to make his bedtime later but we have to be up to get to work/daycare 4 days a week and he's not a good napper...I don't want to short him on sleep.

  • I am not sure why he would flip out of the side car? The crib mattress should be level with your mattress. You can adjust the height of baby's mattress by adding foam blocks, another mattress, or blankets under his mattress. Or you could lower your mattress by you removing your bedframe so that your box spring/mattress is on the ground.

Here are good pictures that should help you. And if I'm misunderstanding you, please explain more so I can try to help! :)https://www.freewebs.com/sidecarcrib/

As far as baby being mobile, I never quite figured that out for us, as we transitioned away from the side-car before he could crawl. But technically, yes, a sidecar-ed baby could wake up, crawl onto your bed and tumble off onto the floor. The only solution I can think of is to attach bells to his pj's so you can hear when he moves, lol, but I realize that's not realistic. Hopefully another sidecar mama has some advice on this piece. :)

    good luck!

     Thanks!

The IKEA crib we have is lower to the ground...It has two settings.  One is higher up for when the baby is small, the lower setting is for when the baby can pull himself up to a standing position.  He's not doing this just yet but it's just a matter of time!  With the crib mattress raised to the hight of our bed, it would be possible for him to flip over the side if he stood up in the crib part.  Like I said...not worried about it when we're sleeping (the lower sides really aren't much different than a siderail would be if we kept him in the bed, but I don't feel safe leaving him in there unattended.  I don't mind staying in there and reading or doing some quiet work in the room but it would be nice to use that time to get things ready for daycare, spend time with DH, cook, etc.

I did see a blog showing how they taught their crawler how to get down off the bed safely...I'm more worried about flipping over the crib rails!

  • When DS started being more mobile, we moved him to a floor bed in his room for his first stretch of sleep. When he wakes (which is usaually when we are going to bed around 11), we move him in with us and we all sleep together.

To prevent him from pulling up on the one exposed side of the crib in the early morning (walls are on two sides, our bed is ond the third side, so just the foot side of the crib is exposed), we placed a plastic laundry basket filled with a night time diaper-change bag,  a pillow, a water bottle, some books, a few soft toys,  and other baby-safe play items in it (that kind of serves as my nightstand). He moves that around for fun, but he can't pull up on it and if he were to, he would tip into that and not over the side of the crib.

  • Ahh now I see what you are saying about him flipping out. Hm, I don't know a solution, but I'll think on it and post again if I come up with anything!

  • As DD got older, we lowered the crib mattress to the lowest setting in our crib, and then used bed risers under the crib legs to lift the whole crib until the mattress was even with our mattress.

You can find them at bed bath & beyond, target, walmart, etc.
