Lets talk Mommy cars

So has anyone thought of trading in their current car for more of a Mommy car?

I've got a 2 door civic right now and while I know it will be annoying, we'll deal with it for a while after baby arrives. But I have been thinking about as baby gets bigger, we may want to get some type of 4 door car. Just wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation, or if anyone has any advice/experience they'd like to share.

Re: Lets talk Mommy cars

  • I already had a mommy car (Toyota Highlander), but I think we'll be going even bigger for #2. I definitely think you should look into a 4-door (getting baby in and out is probably going to be a big-'ol-pain) but I really don't see much of a difference between a 4-door car and a 4-door SUV, until you get into 3rd row discussions. That's where we are... two car seats will leave us with only one extra spot, so we're looking into upgrading to a 4-runner, or similar sized SUV.

  • We recently purchased a 2011 Honda CRV and I love it. We should be able to fit both carseats in the back nicely and there is still plenty of trunk space.
  • i'm thankfull we planned that part before getting prego.  my car died about 5 years ago, and DH really wanted to get a 2 door since it would be cheaper, but i insisted on a 4 door.  grew up with mom's stories of throwing her back out putting a toddler in a 2 door car while prego with me. we planned on having this car quite a while.

  • I had a 2dr Civic until about 2 mos before I got pregnant. We looked at SUVs but went ahead and got a 4 door Acura TSX. It's really spacious and safe! We will get an SUV (with 3 rows) for #2. I agree with pp, definitely get a 4 door- my sister had a 2 dr at first but had a tough time with the car seat. Good luck with car hunt in the future! :)

  • We got rid of my Jetta and got a Jeep Grand Cherokee almost 2 years ago with babies in mind.  I think it will work perfectly fine for one baby, maybe two.  I love my car and I'm not getting rid of it anytime soon!

  • When we traded in our cars 3 and 5 years ago I pushed for getting cars that would accomodate a growing family.  We both had small compact cars which worked fine for us 3 (I have an older kid) but I foresaw the future and knew I would prefer larger vehicles to accomodate the carseat when we have a baby.  We have a truck with a full cab and it's definitely roomy enough.  I drive a Dodge Charger which is huge inside so I'm good there too.  This is very likely our last child (2 total) so I don't see a need for bigger vehicles.

  • I would think long term if I were you - and get a vehcile that you can grow into an SUV or minivan.  we had a car - 4 door sedan when we had our 2nd and never thought about vehicles-- our strolle rtook up the whole trunk and when we got groceries one of us had to stay home with the kids as no room for us all.  lol.

we then bough a mini van and now have a top of the line - with all the bells and whistles van - with leather seats and dvds.  great with kids.

But I would ask yourslef how many kids are you planning on having and go from there.. think also about activities, play dates, neices and nephews and car pool- as its always great to have more seats than not enough JMO.  i am expecting # 4 and we hold 7 passangers total

  • I currently have a 2 door Accord and have just recently realized that it's not very baby friendly. I'm on a very tight budget (having a baby as a single mom in college? Yeah, gonna be hard...) so I've only looked at used cars. So far I've only found a couple of 4-door early 00's Tauruses... I've always had a sort of stigma against Ford, so I'm skeptical, but does anybody know if they're a safe family car? How are they on mileage?

  • We will be shuffling our cars around. I have a Honda CR-V( which I love) DH has a Honda Accord. We will be trading in the Accord for a new Honda Pilot and DH will drive the CR-V. I really, really wish my CR-V had more room. But it doesn't, so I need a bigger SUV. The CR-V is perfect for one kid, and a stroller. But it will be really tight with two car seats and a double stroller.

  • I like my Honda Pilot - comes with most features already so not huge cost addition.
  • I drive a GMC Yukon, so it is plenty big. Bigger than I had wanted but DH talked me into it and now I love it.

DH drives a regular cab Chevy truck. It's mostly used for him going to work or quick trips to the store. He loves his truck but it's not practical (the 3 of us don't fit) so I'm trying to talk him into a new crew cab.

We also have a car but we never drive it, we'll probably trade it in for a smaller SUV at some point.

  • I have a Mazda Tribute, which we've loved, but I'm hoping to trade it in for something newer. I need an SUV for our big dogs to travel in (in the back) when we visit my family. I still don't know where we will put luggage and baby gear. Our SUV is filled now when we go on a trip. I may have to get a small travel trailer for extra stuff! Lol.
  • I recently got rid of my VW Jetta and traded it in for a Toyota Highlander, knowing we were trying to start a family.  I had to use a car seat in my Jetta for a friend once and it didn't fit well at all, so I'm happy we got rid of it!

  • We also have a Honda Pilot and LOVE it!!!  Tons of space but not too big, 3rd row seating for extra passengers, and even the base model comes with great accessories.  I had a 4-door Honda Accord when we had DD, and while it was big enough I cannot imagine using it with 2+ carseats.  So if you're planning on having more than 1 baby, you might keep that in mind when looking at vehicles.

To be honest though... And I never thought I would catch myself saying or even thinking this... I swoon when I see a new Honda Odyssey mini-van on the road or on tv Embarrassed  I just love all of the features, the allocation of space inside, and the new exterior look!  But DH and I both really do love our Pilot, so it's unlikely we would trade it in for a mini-van.

  • Does anyone have or know anyone that has a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4door)? I've had mine for about a month now but I'm afraid between the car seat, stroller, baggage, dog, etc, the space is going to be tight. I love having a Jeep and can't wait until the summer so I can take the top off but I'm questioning the practicality with baby on the way...

  • I have a Mini and am traumatised at the thought of letting it go.

DH has kindly said I can upgrade to a Mini Countryman. It will have no bells & whistles, but I'll still have my daily Mini fix!

  • I did this once it started becoming too painful on my back in the old car.

I had a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder.  I now have a 2011 Mazda CX-7.  I love it!  Blue tooth, sirius radio, back up camera, heated seats for driver and front passenger that I can't use yet but others have liked, sunroof.  It's awesome.

It's very easy to get in and out of and with twins it will be much easier than having to bend down to get the car seats in and out.  And there is lots of room in the trunk.

  • I bought a 2011 GMC Terrain last spring in hopes of starting a family in the near future, so I am set. Made sure there was plenty of room for car seats and my DH who is 6'7".

We are considering options for DH's car. Right now he has a Monte Carlo and isn't liking the idea of having to mess with a 2 door car and a baby.

  • When I bought my car, I wanted something big enough to haul just about anything. You never know when you might buy a piece of furniture, help someone move, etc. I got a Chevy Trailblazer and love it. Unfortunately, they aren't made anymore so when this one bites the dust I'll have to get something else... probably a Traverse. I want plenty of room for future LOs.

It's easier to get a older child into a 2 door than an infant.. just saying once they can climb in the seat themselves thats when it is less of a problem.

Chevy is bringing back the Trailblazer in 2013 but think right now it will just be for sale in the middle east. Read an article saying they were debating bringing it back to the US or not.

  • I drive a Chevy Tahoe with a 3rd row, so no need to trade in for more space.  We did buy DH a new Dodge Journey about 6 months ago because we knew that he wouldn't be able to have a car seat in his old truck (no back seat).

My SIL traded in her cute Mustang for a Kia Sportage before her son was born.  She was going to keep the Mustang because it was paid off, but then she realized how hard it was getting the car seat in and out of a 2-door car.
