How do you give vitamins?

Our pedi suggested that we start giving LO vitamins now, but it is torture trying to get him to take them.  I tasted them and don't really blame him, they taste bad.

So I was wondering what others do?

Do you hold LO down and force the drops into his/her mouth?

Do you put them in with a bottle of BM?  Any concerns that s/he will refuse the bottle and you'll waste the milk?

Our pedi just mentioned Vitamin D drops.  I tried the Enfamil drops for a while and it was awful! I finally saw someone on here mention Carlson's Baby D (Kids D) drops, and now I use those.  They are great.  You can put literally 1 drop on your nipple before a feeding and that's all LO needs to get the full dose!

  • My son doesn't like them either.  I give them to him at the same time each day and even though he cringes he still takes them.  I try to get the end of the dropper near his cheek so that he doesn't have to taste them as much.  Maybe you could try that.

  • We give Aubrey them straight from the dropper ince a day. We just put the dropper in the back side towards the cheek of her mouth and she would take them. No real issues getting her to take them. Now that she's older and mobile, we give them to her in the bath tub. That way if she moves/spits them out etc. she's already in the tub and we can wash her off.

  • LO seems to like Poly Vis Ol, so I guess we are the minority with that.  My brother taught me a trick.  Put your finger on the tongue and put the dropper to the inside of her cheek.  Slowly, squirt it into her mouth.  She can't spit it out since your finger is there and it doesn't hurt her.

  • I put the dropper in LO's mouth, let her start sucking on it and slowly release the medicine.  At first, I gave her a nook or my finger to suck on to make sure she'd swallow it all.  I also give her meds right before I feed her, so she doesn't have a yucky medicine taste in her mouth.

  • My daughter was formula fed, and when I had to give her medi (she had reflux), I would put only the nipple from the bottle in her mouth (not the whole bottle)... once she would start sucking, I would squirt the medi into the nipple, and she would take it fine. Since the bottle was already far enough in her mouth, she never tasted it and didn't know what she was drinking! Good luck!

  • Our son gets Poly Vi Sol with iron (he was a preemie), and it's NASTY.  What I do is give it to him in a bottle nipple.  So, I just squirt it into the nipple and let him drink the vitamins out of it.  I've never really had a problem.

Oh, and that stuff stains like crazy (at least the one with iron does), so be careful.
