I'm thinking of joining (at the pressure of some work friends) but wanted to see if there was a "mom" perspective. Am I crazy to sign up for a probationary year hoping to be pregnant and have a baby in that year??

Re: Anyone in Junior League?
lol! You might be.
I friend of mine is in the JLA and pregnant now. She'll be taking off for maternity leave (going inactive) this fall. I'm joining in 2013 when she's back in active status and I've finished my current board leadership obligations.
amycathy is a member and she can probably tell you what the commitment is like for the provisional year. It's a lot of work but I think you can do it.
Also, I know that there are some members of the Junior Forum on here that could tell you about that organization.
I'm coming from the perspective of a much smaller League than Austin, but it's definitely doable. While pregnant, it would be no big deal. With a little one, you can make it work if you have a husband/family/sitters who will be available to watch the kiddo.
I believe the provisional obligations are more demanding than they are in my League, but you probably would know far enough in advance the schedule for the league year that you could make accommodations once baby arrives. Also, I know in my league, it's possible to knock out a lot of your work/volunteer obligations out early on. So if you are pregnant during the year, you might be able to fulfill a lot of what you need to before baby is born.
squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
Ahem. Agran, I have no useful information for you. Carry on everyone!
When we first moved here, my boss suggested that I get involved, but things were way too in flux for me to dedicate the time. Now I wonder if I'm too old to join as a provisional, so I'm hesitant to bring it up to her again (six years later, ha).
In Austin there is. Some city leagues don't have age maxes. Minimum age is 25. Maximum is 40.
Hi! I tried to send you a message on FB but couldn't make it work so I think i tried to add you as a friend.
To answer your question, the first year is the hardest but you can make it work, especially knowing that you may be pregnant during the year. I wasn't pregnant during my provisional year but the girls who were did most of their placement as early as possible with permission from the chair. It hasn't been to hard, but i have to say when I was pregnant my team was great on my placement, they really worked with me to make sure I didn't have any problems and got everything done in time.
Please let me know if you have any more questions or feel free to email me at amy _ catherine @ hotmail.com
The nice thing about joining later is your aren't committed 15 to 20 years of service, maybe only 4 or 5. You must go sustaining by 45, I think.
Interesting! Thanks so much :-)
This is why I didn't join a couple of years ago.
My friend, D, was saying it was kind of the best of both worlds and one of the reasons I hope to join next year.
I'll be there Sunday too... this is the time we need a nestie signal.
