Hi everyone, Our preference is a daycare center but it's not likely we will get off the wait lists in time. We are in the Del Ray/Old Town Alexandria area, not much choice around here. I'm having trouble finding in-home daycare, but will start looking.
It seems that a lot of people in this area do nannyshares. But to me, it seems so much more expensive! Can someone fill me in if my thinking is correct?
Average seems to be $12-15 per hour. If it's over 40 hrs you pay overtime. Is that per child? Or is that what is divided by all the families? The daycares I'm looking at are about $350 per week for 12 hrs per day. Seems to be a better deal than a nanny who would cost $480 a week, plus overtime. Do you also have to pay vacation and benefits for a nanny?

We paid our nanny $825/week (split between the 2 families) for 8:00 to 6:00. She paid her own taxes, and got a week of vacation, though I think 2 weeks is more typical. We did not pay benefits (health), but as an employer, you are responsible for paying half of his/her social security and medicare (and you are responsible for withholding his/her half as well, and paying the entire amount in April). There was also a minimal quarterly unemployment tax to the state of VA (about $150/quarter). So yes, it does add up, but we thought it was worth it for DD to get more individual care.
Good luck - finding quality childcare is probably the most stressful thing!
We have a nanny share in the same area. Yes, it is much more expensive. We pay our nanny $19/hr split between 2 families. We started at $18/hr. Every nanny I interviewed wanted at least $18 for two infants, although I was "told" the starting rate was $15. Overtime is at time and a half for the split rate. That for us was one of the big savings over having a nanny by ourselves. Because our share family doesn't use overtime, we pay $19/hour ourselves for the 5 hours of overtime per week (otherwise our nanny would make less in her overtime hours than in her regular hours). All in with taxes, our OOP was about $25K last year. We're in a position where we can afford it and the flexibility and convenience is worth the cost tradeoff. Not having to get DD ready in the morning is such a huge time savings for me (we host). But, it's no question that the cost is a trade off.
