Double subject! Husband has a big birthday coming up in a couple weeks and I decided I would take him whale watching and get him a new lens for the trip.
He has a Canon Rebel T2i and he already has the 18-55 and 55-250 lenses. I'm wondering what would be good to get him that is sort of telephoto but not like paparazzi level.
I know several of you are into photography, any suggestions? Thanks!
Also, has any one done a whale watching boat trip? I know someone who did the one out of Half Moon Bay and liked it, but only saw one whale (which I know that just can depend on the day or whatever). That one is about 3 hours. There is one out of SF that is like 6 hours and also one that sounds really good out of Monterrey, but I am not sure if Monterrey is too far to drive (we live in Sac). I think I will schedule it for some time in March. Anyway, if anyone has gone or knows someone that has, I would love recs or definitely avoid X or whatever. Thanks again!
Re: Camera lens and whale watching recs?
No reca on the camera lens, but we are also going WW in February in Monterey. We'll use one of the two highest rated trip companies that I found on Yelp. They both had great reviews, are only 3-4 hour trips, and pretty much gaurentee you'll see some marine life!
Telephoto lenses would be a good idea for the whale watching. You may want to rent one or borrow one from a friend instead of buying one though. They are very pricing. I have a friend in the Sac area that rents lenses before he buys just to try them out first.
DH and I went down to Monterrey a few years ago. The drive is not too far. We stayed at Asilomar to save costs and it was awesome place. I don't know how good it is on the whale watching but Asilomar is very central to Carmel and Monterey.
