LO putting themself into a sitting position?

My DS has been able to sit up on his own since 5 months but is not able to get there on his own. He tries to hard and usually looks like he is trying to do sit ups but can't go from laying down into a sitting position. I could not really find out what age this is normal but are other LOs doing this yet?

Re: LO putting themself into a sitting position?

  • Ella started doing this around 6 months, right before she started crawling a few weeks later (week before 7 months)  But, that said, all LO's are different and there are a few kids in Ella's daycare who are not doing this, or rolling yet.  Once they can sit up, they are closer to crawling... And, enjoy while you can, DD is now cruising (holding onto things while walking).  They grow super fast!~

  • DD also started doing it before she crawled, maybe around 6 months.  But from laying on her tummy she would do (and still does) basically the splits and walks herself up with her arms until she's sitting.  Its pretty funny.  She is very flexible!

  • Mine started a few weeks ago. I heard mumbling from the monitor, and when I turned the screen on, there he was, sitting up. I didn't even see the progression to it. He just figured it out one day.

  • DS has been sitting up and crawling since about 5.5 months but he just figured out how to put himself in to sitting position around 7.5 months.    He started out by crawling up to a wall or piece of furniture and using it as a support to prop himself up into a sit and then he would let go.

  • DD loves sitting but hasn't pulled herself there yet.  She just doesn't seem interested yet.  She is trying to get places though...she's finding out the hard way that learning really far doesn't do much other than make you faceplant!

  • DS is not crawling yet, he's gotten really good at rolling but he has been trying really hard for the past couple days to sit up, he goes from his belly to a side plank position and from there he can get his tush on the floor but can't let go of the arm holding him up yet and usually ends up either back on his belly or on a semi-push up position with one leg still folded under him.

  • My boys started doing this a week or two before they started crawling (7months-ish).

  • DD isn't doing this yet, but she also isn't crawling and based on the previous posts it looks like these 2 steps are kind of going together. She does sometimes do "mini crunches" when on her back to try to get into a sitting position. She's gonna have abs of steel if she doesn't get the hang of it soon! :)

  • Lydia has been putting herself from lying to sitting for about a week now. She still isn't crawling, and she'll be 9 months old in 2 days! She still manages to get around quite well with scooting herself backwards and rolling. She is pulling herself up to her knees quite well, and up to standing a few times. I have a feeling there will be walking and crawling within weeks of each other!
  • My DD is a crawling machine, but almost refuses to sit up.  She will in her high chair and stuff, but she won't stay seated for very long.  It cracks me up that she crawled before she would even sit for any amount of time!

She's been using her arm as sort of a kickstand right now. So, she's trying to get there from crawling for sure.  Today, she was really close, but again she doesn't like to stay seated for long. That girl is lightning fast and far prefers being on the move!

  • Also, he likely won't just go from laying on his back to doing a sit-up movement. They usually go from crawling position to a seated position, but each kid is so different.

  • Thanks everyone. I think he is close to crawling so maybe he is close to being able to put himself into a sitting position too.

I don't know for sure why, but I know this is not good for LO's. A therapist would suggest you to stop her now.
    Good Luck

  • My daughter was able to pull up to stand, kneel and crawl before she would balance herself in a seated position. (I would put her in a seated position and she would flop forward and crawl) This week, she learned how to put herself into a sited position AND how to balance when sitting. (She still prefers to kneel, crawl and stand though)

  • A few weeks ago, if  I put my son into a sitting position, he was fine and could sit there, but couldn't do it on his own. Now, he's doing it on his own ALL the time, even in the crib - as well as crawling and pulling up on everything!
  • My LO sits ups fine on her own, but can't quite get there on her own from a laying down position. I do know that she has done it before, because the other night she was in her crib on her back and when I went back into her room she was sitting up! She army crawls like a champs, rocks on all fours, and also lounges on her side (using her arm as a kickstand like a PP mentioned). She's also kneeled before. I have asked DC to not tell me if she hits milestones because I want to be able to see them. I get so little time with her when I get home from work I just like to snuggle with her in a chair instead of playing on the floor with her.
