Nervous about the mini pill

I know a lot of people are on it.  This may sound like a silly post.  But for moms who have been on it prior to this LO, was it successful in protection?  I'm nervous about it.  I haven't started it yet (waiting for my next "period") but DH and I really really REALLY hate condoms and wanted another form of protection.  I'm seriously considering just using the condoms for the next year or so to ease my mind.  Do I have much to worry about with the mini pill or is it pretty successful?

  • I am worried too!  The instruction sheets says it prevents ovulation in about HALF of your cycles, but also makes CM super thick so nothing gets through.  Still not very reassuring to me!!  We have only had pp sex twice and both times used condoms, too.

  • You could always chart to help prevent.   You usually ovulate 12-14 days before your period (I think - I would need to ref TCOYF).  So once you become regular with your period it might be an easy few days to avoid.

Or...use the same bc as my sister.  The "sit on the toilet and cough it out" method.  Yeah...I'll let you know when she's pg.   haha

  • I'm nervous too, BUT if you set an alarm and take the pill at the same exact time every single day, you cut the chances of pregnancy to 1 in 200 in a year. Good odds. (Not quite as good odds: "typical use" results in 1 in 20 chance over the course of a year).

I had to LOL at your sister's method - congrats in advance on her BFP ;)

    OMFG. Dying. Of. Laughter.

I would like to include charting, but I am not sure how XD

  • It makes me nervous too but we are relying on it. I know my DH and I and we will "say" we will use condoms and then not so I am definitely not going to rely on condoms. My biggest worries are financial (no idea how we could afford 2 right now) and my OB said I should wait at least 6 months to let my c-section incision heal (that is really my biggest concern). After 6 months if we are part of that .1% that gets pregnant on the mini pill then I guess it was meant to be!

  • I'm nervous about the mini pill too (as stated in "paranoid about getting knocked up again"). I just don't trust it as much as the regular pill. DH and I have never used condoms so I'd prefer not to start but I also don't want to be pregnant again for at least another year or two.

I can just hear my mom going "Oh Madeline" in that 'what have you done' mom voice if I had to tell her that I was pregnant again so soon after having DD...

  • I have been on the mini pill two weeks now and I am seriously scared of getting pregnant so soon after DD. 2 under 2 would be great, but not 2 under 1! Since I'm EBF I didn't start it on a certain day like I did with my regular bc... should I have? My dr didn't go into detail with it, just that I should probably get Mirena, he didn't really seem sold on the mini pill. But I've heard stories of people on Mirena who have had bleeding, it coming out, complications that I thought outweighed the positives right now. I'd love to hear stories from people who have been on it successfully.

  • My OB told me that it's really only about 86% effective.  I wanted Mirena, but since my stupid insurance is Catholic, they won't pay for any type of BC so I got the Depo shot.  It's 99% effective and doesn't affect my supply.  And I only have to get it 4 times a year.  Much better than trying to remember every day.

  • I'm just nervous about taking this and the effect it may have on my milk supply....I think kellymom.com advises against any kind of BCP during nursing, but I know this is least likely to effect your supply, compared to other BCPs.  We are a condom crew for the interim period, FWIW!!!

    LMFAO That is amazing.

  • Since I have borderline PMDD I have to have some sort of hormonal BC, so they put me on the mini pill. We're using condoms, too considering I got pregnant on the regular pill. I'm paranoid and don't trust the damned things, but the pill is the only thing covered by my insurance right now. Boo.

  • I was one of those lucky women who had a problem with the minipill and my milk supply. I chose to stop taking it and DH and I are using condoms for now.

  • Im on it and we will be using a condom every single time until I can go back on combination BCP. I don't trust it.

  • I was on the mini-pill for years successfully. HOWEVER, I literally set a timer and took it the same time every day - you forget once and you can get pregnant. Also, it is less effective for heavier women (my OB said anything over 145 lbs, which to me is not really "heavy"!).

After DD was born I got the Mirena, and it was wonderful. I did not ever have a period and had no side effects.

This time around I got Implanon, which is progesterone only just like Mirena but is implanted in your arm (so it can't fall out!). It does not impact your milk supply and lasts for 3 years.

I am on the Mirena and it has been difficult at first, but I am hoping once everything evens out, it will be worth it not having to worry about pregnancy for 5 years.

It was pretty painful and difficult to get put in for me. I went in during my period and he said I have some scar tissue on my cervix that made it difficult to go in; he gave me a pill to take to help my cervix dilate and a valium to relax me and I went back in the next day and got it placed. It hurt pretty bad, that first day, but started feeling better the next. I have not stopped bleeding since.

No one told me that apparently you can bleed off and on or non-stop for up to 6 months. I am not too pleased with that,

But yea I definitely don't wanna get pregnant again for a long time, if ever, so Mirena seemed like the best option for me right now.

Don't know if that'll help you; but that's from someone who just had it done about a month ago.

  • Ive been on the minipill for a month and it hasn't affected my supply.

My OB was adamant that if I quit BFing to call right away for a regular pill prescription.  I guess the minipill is only 99% effective when used in combination with BFing.  He said it goes down to something like 75-80% when used on it's own...EEEEK!!

i am also really careful to take it at the same time every day or else it isn't as effective.  Of course, we aren't haveing sex yet so maybe I shouldn't be so concerned...Stick out tongue I know I will have to give in soon.  DH drops about 57 hints a day that he is ready to go again!

  • I'm also taking the mini pill. I'm not too nervous about it since I'm EBF and I've heard that helps with the birth control. I haven't had any issues with my supply and I set an alarm to make sure that I take it at the same time every day.

  • I was on the mini pill for about 1 year before I got pregnant.  I was on Yaz but had trouble with that so I went on the mini pill.  I did not get pregnant while on it.  I stopped the pill in November and switched to condoms until we started trying in January and I got pregnant in March.  You just need to make sure you take it around the same time everyday.  You have a 3 hour period that you have to take it in.

My OB said I could start it at any time.  I did wait until the following Sunday because that's when I'm used to picking up my refills.

It is hard to remember to take it at exactly the same time every day.  I have an alarm set and that is the only thing that keeps me from slipping up!!

  • I was nervous too.  Plus I think it made me feel weird.  I stopped after my first pack and had the Mirena put in.  So far I love it!  However, we also think we might be done having kids.  Probably wouldn't have done the Mirena if I wanted to get pregnant again in the next year or two.

  • You say you are waiting for your next period?  You can start any time and always use a back up for 7 days after starting a hormonal method.  Maybe you've had a PPP but I didn't for 16mo w/ DD1 so don't wait for a period.  Also note there is no "withdrawl" bleed ie period on the minipill so don't be surprised.
