Babies: 0 - 3 Months

could it be the vitamin d drops?

So my ped suggested I give our bf son vitamin D drops, which I just started giving him two nights ago.  Both nights have been hell - he's been up all night, he's been extremely gassy, and BOTH of us are exhausted.  Do you think it could be the vitamins, or do you think it might be the 6 week growth spurt or something?

  • I think it is just a coincidence. Sorry about the bad nights! They are hard!

  • I think it may be something. I dread giving my LO the drops. He gets choked up when I use the droper and always seems to be gassy after. When I put it in a bottle with pumped BM he doesnt seem to take the bottle as well! I'm going to ask my pedi at my apt next week. You should too!

  • I was warned that the Vit D drops that require a dropper full may cause gassiness.  I switched to the ones that only require a single drop and his gas significantly improved.

Thank you!  Question - was it your pediatrician that warned you of this, or a friend?  Just curious.  Thanks!

  • Sort of off topic, but I got some of the vit D drops on my hand the other day and licked them off (didn't have a paper towel within reach!).  I discovered that they are NASTY- very bitter!  My little one hasn't had any trouble with them, but a friend of mine said her LO started gettting very bad gas after starting them.

We had problems with our first doses of Vit D as well.  It was the 1 mL dropper and he had terrible gas and having screaming fits.  Did it for two days, and stopped and he went back to normal.  Tried again when he was older and it happened again.  Now the pedi gave us Vit D that is just two tiny drops a day and he's been doing fine on that so far.  I've read on the boards about Carlson Vit D drops that you can buy on Amazon, unfortunately for me they don't ship to military addresses overseas.

It was a healthcare nurse when I had his 2 month shots.  Sorry it took me so long to reply, I didn't see your question until this morning.
