Moving to Seattle @ 35wks

I'm currently 27 weeks and I'll be moving to Seattle at the end of Februrary, I'll be 35 weeks the day I arrive. I'm going by train so I'll be on the ground, more baggage for cheaper, and more relaxing.... But my question is what are some good hospitals, doctors, and birthing classes. I have United Health Care Insurance. I'm taking birthing classes here but I'd like to take some up there with my Fiance. He wants to experience the sonograms and birthing classes first hand; and I'd like that also. I've been recording all the visits and classes for him so he can still be involved while he's working...I'm just trying to get everything lined up because we'll be short on time when I finally arrive. Any advice I can get would be great!

  • Where in Seattle (roughly) will you be? It can make a big difference if you are north or south of downtown or on the eastside...since driving times and traffic can vary so much.

Personally, I love Swedish, and have stuck with them for years...I delivered at Swedish Ballard, and this time Swedish Issaquah.

  • What area are you moving too? That'll give us a starting point to help you with some referrals.

You likely will have to take what you can get, doctor wise, at this point.  Even classes often fill up early. You can take classes at any hopital, even if you don't give birth there, so check out the websites and schedule your best option.
  • I agree that it depends on where you will be living. I think it also depends on the kind of birth you want or expect.

We live in Kenmore (north of seattle) and are delivering at Puget Sound Birth Center. We toured Evergreen and Overlake. I thought both seemed like good hospitals though Evergreen had better reviews on their birthing and baby class and I took a breastfeeding class there that was impressive. They seemed better about keeping the baby with you as soon as possible from what I got on the tour. However, the c-section rates at both eastside places seemed high. We've decided that if something comes up and we're no longer birth center candidates we'd switch to the University of WA hospital since their c-section rate is about 10% lower (just an estimate) despite getting more of the complicated cases.

We live in Edmonds (north of Seattle) and drove to the eastside to deliver at Evergreen. We were very happy there. I had an almost natural birth (two doses of pain killers during transition only) and our DD never left our sight. They followed our birth plan as I laid it out. We had our own room, our own nurse, and DD was kept with us the entire time. We had a good experience there and would highly recommend it - even with the drive we had.

  • I have UHC and delivered at Providence in Everett. It was a great experience. I had a scheduled c-section and stayed 4 days. My baby was never out of my sight the whole time, despite having a c/s. My OBGYN is at Providence and we'll for sure deliver there again for #2.

  • I was at Puget sound birthing center and loved my midwives!! However, I had a very long labor and transferred to UW. I was extremely happy with them, even though we ended up in an unplanned c-section. They were kind and respected all of our wishes. I will consider going back for our next child. :)

     Good luck and congrats!

  • It's in Ballard; I believe that's in North West Seattle. I'm not quite sure because I don't really know the area that well. I seen one of the Swedish Medical Center's locations is about 5 miles away from the house. Thanks for the help guys! I am kind of lost. I am taking birthing classes down here and my sister is my coach and we're recording it for Chris, but I know he'd like to attend a few classes also.
