BW's - stroller question

I plan to BW and am wondering how much I will use a stroller. I don't see myself using it very often, except maybe on some walks from home, but even those I will BW sometimes I think.

I'm trying to decide between travel systems that have a $100 difference. Of course I think I like the more expensive one a tad more, but am wondering if the slight differences are worth the money given that I don't plan to use it alot.

Any thoughts?

If you plan on baby wearing most of the time I wouldn't get a travel system which is big and heavy. Get a snap and go for the car seat and a very light weight umbrella stroller with recline for later.

I agree! I liked the snap and go because it had a lot of room to carry things below, and if baby fell asleep while we were driving I didn't have to wake him. It's also cheap (and commonly sold on CL), fits in the trunk, and is pretty durable.

I got a Chicco Liteway for our other stroller, and it works when we want it.

I've never missed having a travel system, and I spent less this way.

  • We got a travel system because my anti-BWing mom insisted and I honestly never used the stroller.  It is still sitting in my garage in the box.  I didn't need a stroller until DS was close to 1yo. and then I bought a jogger and used it to carry my stuff if need be.

  • It's hard to say because it basically boils down to personal preference.

I babywear a lot at home and for short trips, like the grocery store. But I do like my travel system stroller for longer trips, like going to the zoo. It's nice because it reclines flat so I can easily change his diaper in it and he can nap laying down. Plus there's lots of space underneath to keep stuff. I've never found it too heavy but it would be cumbersome for daily use mostly because it hogs up a lot of trunk space.

Now that it's cold we don't get out as much and I mostly baby wear because it seems warmer to have him cuddled up close to me. But come summer time I can see me using the stroller more for things like walking the dog when having him up against me will be sweaty.

  • i'm glad somebody asked this question.

i registered for a travel system at first. hubby said we "needed" a stroller, but eventually i talked him out of it (at least for now).

my plan is to wear her when going out, and walking.

later on i want to get a jogging stroller so i can go running with her.

Since we are not currently experiencing a stroller shortage in the country getting a stroller/not getting a stroller isn't something that has to be decided ASAP. :p

To the OP: If you're on the fence about a stroller wait and see. I promise there will be strollers in the stores if later think you'll need one.

LOL, this is true! But since I was thinking travel system I need to decide that or carseat. I guess I wasn't looking at a very good travel system because price wise it's the same as a seat and snap n go. Some very good points here though so I'll have to keep thinking for a bit... Thanks ladies! Big Smile

  • While I'm glad we got a BOB, we really don't use it all that much.  In our walks after dinner, either my husband or I wrap her.

  • We didn't get a stroller until our first son was 5-6 months old. We just wore him when we walked somewhere.

We ended up getting a Phil & Ted, bc we knew we wanted more kids, and it was virtually the only tandem stroller that wasn't side-by-side at the time. We now have a MaClaren, too, but the baby has to be pretty big for that one. Both have been worth the money for us, no question.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I wore her everywhere as a baby and had a jogging stroller for jogging. :) When she got older, I got a relatively inexpensive ($50) umbrella stroller for zoo trips, shopping at the mall, etc. That's been all I've needed!

  • It depends on your lifestyle/individual needs.

If you don't think you'll be using the stroller a lot, you could go with the less expensive one.  Also, I've heard that travel systems are so heavy.  Maybe you could get a stroller that's not part of a travel system.

PP mentioned a good point about considering whether other people would get any use from it.

    We used a snap-n-go.

We bought a BOB and use it for carrying bags at the mall and for running. We brought it to the zoo with us and my husband wore him in the moby for the first half of the trip and I wore him in the sling for the second half.

Something else to consider - I NEVER use my stroller. However, when my parents or ILs are in town, they do. You don't need an expensive stroller, but it's a good idea to have one. Even if you end up using it to carry "stuff" while you carry LO.

This is a really good point. We had a snap and go, which MH and I used about twice. But my mom and my sister liked to take her on walks with it.

Now that she's outgrown the infant seat, my mom actually bought us an umbrella stroller so she could take her on a walk (we had a few randomly nice weather days). I used it once to go shopping and am not completely sold.

In short, it's nice to have the option, but I'd advise going the cheaper route.

  • We got a snap n go, and will assess when LO is older if we want a cheaper stroller, or a fancier more expensive one.  Love the snap n go though....but we definetely BW more!

  • We liked the Snap-and-Go for times when LO was out  or when I wanted to try on clothes and not put a little baby on the floor (not that there is really anything wrong with that). We just borrowed the snap-and-go from a friend, but they also seem to be plentiful on the used marker. As for a stroller beyond that, we got an umbrella stroller off Freecycle that is all we need. We use it once a week when LO comes to work with me and I have too much stuff to wear LO and tote it all. For us, it just didn't make sense to buy something new, or even buy something at all.
  • If you plan on baby wearing most of the time, you will hardly use the stroller.  I think I can count on 1 hand the number of times that we used ours.  My son is about to turn 2 and prefers walking on his own most of the time.  I would say spend your money on a convertible car seat that will grow with your child and pick up an inexpensive stroller.

  • We use ours more to tote our bags.  It gets to be cumbersome to wear and carry the diaper bag, camera bag, food bad (we're cheap...we always bring our own food).  Although we still occasionally wear DS, he prefers to just run into the stroller when his legs are tired and then hop back out when he sees something he's interested in.

  • My LO will be 5 months on Thursday and we have never used our stroller.  We used a snap n' go for his infant car seat for the first few months, but that was just for when he was sleeping...he would always wake up while in the snap n' go being pushed and I'd put him in the Ergo, but push the snap n' go with the infant seat in it just to have a place for diaper bags and any purchases we made, etc while shopping.  Family and neighborhood walks - have never used the stroller.

Since he has moved to the convertible seat (about a month ago), I haven't even brought any stroller system with me anymore.  I did learn quickly that I needed a bigger backpack style bag though since I have no stroller to toss a bag into.

I have nothing against the stroller...he and I just prefer BWing.

  • I'm new to this board, have a unique situation, and am new to even the idea of BWing so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.  My DD has an older adopted sister that is 9 years old so we are at soccer games and other random school activities all the time.  I bought a cheap used stroller that was part of a stroller system that went with my carseat.  Its bulky and heavy.  But the stroller system is nice because it can close up in those cold situations to keep DD warmer.  The snap n go doesn't close as nicely.  She's also away from my loud face at the soccer games. :)  She might have been warmer if I had been wearing her but at that point, this hadn't crossed my mind yet. If I can figure out BWing by the time the spring season starts, the stroller may be getting a lot less use.
