BF and pregnancy

My dd is 18mo old and I still haven't gotten my period yet. I still nurse her 2-3 times/day when I am at home (in the AM and PM), and I just recently started to wean her off completely since DH and I are ready for #2 and I started wondering whether my body is ovulating (since I dont have periods). Has anyone else had experience with this? I talked with my ob-gyn, and he suggested that I take hormone pills to trick the body to ovulate. TIA!

Re: BF and pregnancy

  • If you're not getting your period, then you're not ovulating. Some women don't resume ovulating until they completely wean. It is possible to ovulate and get pregnant on the first try and then you wouldn't get your period, but a test would tell you if you were pregnant. I wouldn't take hormones, I would continue the weaning process and let your body adjust on its own. The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great resource about learning your fertility signs and has a section about TTC and bf'ing.

  • I think how your body responds to BFing varies a lot. I know people who EBF and got their period a few months postpartum. Mine didn't come back until DD was 17 months. I was nursing her as much as ever so I'm not sure why it showed up then. I conceived the next cycle; it looks like that cycle was wonky because I would've conceived on day 21 so it was a long cycle (I ended up miscarrying). Since the mc my cycles have been regular. One of my friends is BFing her daughter who just turned 2 and hasn't had her period yet. She's not ready to TTC so she's just going with it for now. I don't know anyone who's tried hormone pills.

  • OK, thanks ladies. I wasnt sure if I wanted to take these "hormone" pill. Maybe I will see if my period will come back in the next 2-3 months. My body needs a break anyways :)
