I hope this is the place to post this question. I figured some of you may have been through something that would require help and might have advice. I just have really no idea how to start.
I need to find some help for a family member that is terminally ill, getting weaker and more sickly on a daily basis and has a small child. Basically, she needs help with things like bathing the child, cooking meals, light housework (dishes, laundry, etc.) and maybe some transportation help. The family member (adult) also has healthcare needs from time to time.
Aside from the last detail, I think maybe a part-time nanny would be the route to go, but with the health issues, would I need to look for some sort of health care worker? Who would I contact to do that? Where do I start? Any advice? (FWIW, there is no insurance for in-home health care in this situation, so this would all be out of pocket. That eliminates any insurance company involvement but ups the $$ aspect.)
Re: How do I go about finding some home care assistance?
It depends on whether you're going private or using a state-funded care worker.
I have MS, and though I don't need a home care worker, I was reading a book about parenting while disabled and it stated very clearly that any carer for the adult who is funded by the state is not to take part in child care. At all! That's totally fair, IMO. It gets really murky from a legal and ethical stand point hiring the same person to look after a child and an adult.
My uneducated opinion would be that maybe hiring someone privately and being very upfront about job duties, even if it's only occasionaly taking care of the adult, might be the best option
Good luck!
eta: it also gets murky dealing with "assistance" re: childcare as there's no such thing as state-funded nannies.
