Poll: Painting nails/toes of toddler boy - ok or not?

When I paint my daughter's nails/toenails, my son (2.5 years old) always wants his painted as well. I think this is perfectly acceptable and fun, so I paint them. I paint them green or blue - not pink.

My ex-H is NOT ok with me painting his nails/toes at all.

Just wondering what y'all (and your spouse/SO) think about painting a toddler boy's nails/toenails. I'd love to hear why/why not too.

  • Sorry for the dup; can't seem to edit it.

  • I put that it's ok with both of us, but I don't have an older daughter getting her's painted at the same time.

  • I wouldn't necessarily say my husband wasn't okay with it, but he did comment to the effect that he didn't want DS going out and about with his nails painted for long. I was like "I don't care about it, if you don't like it, you can deal with taking the polish off." He never put in the effort to de-polish DS, so I figured it wasn't really that important to him.

  • I don't think my ex has a problem with it buy I would understand if he did. DS has never asked for it but if he did I would probably do it and take it off at bath time or something.
  • I'm kind of a special snowflake.  My DH is OK with it when they're young, but he's not sure at what age he would want it to stop/not be OK with it.

  • Phew! For a second I thought this post was prompted by MY post about where to find Piggy Paint. :)

ETA: For the record, both DH and I are fine with it. My only rule, as Ben gets older, is that he can do what he wants with his dress and style as long as a) it's not permanent and b) doesn't conflict with the dress code at his school.

  • In our house we have a rule that you have to be 3 to get your nails painted. It was a *really* big deal to Audrey to wait until she turned 3 so we tell Finn the same rule applies to him. Once he turns 3 he's welcome to all the "polish makeup" he wants. :)
  • My son is 4.5 and still has his toenails painted. Sometimes when he is at taekwando and barefoot, I get random comments and stares from it but if that's what he likes then we are 100% supportive of it. I did stop painting his fingernails though but that was more to shelter him from older kids being insensitive and mean. I used to paint them pink bit decides he could pick out his own and now he has altering blue/green.
  • I think its fine but I do think you (general you, here) should tell the kid that its a girl thing.  Full disclosure, you know?'

Jakob used to love to play with my makeup.  I'd tell him he was being a silly boy, make up is for girls.  He didn't care, he just wanted to use my blush like war paint across his cheeks.
