Working moms

If you have to stay home from work to care for your sick child, do you typically book that as vacation or sick time? I'm wondering if sick time should only be used if YOU are sick.

Thanks!

Re: Working moms

  • I think it depends on your company policy.  Some companies require "advance" notice for vacation so in that case you would call in sick.  I don't think it matters who is sick, you have to stay home/leave work on short or no notice anyway.  That is why some companies just have "leave" time and you use it for whatever.  Unless it is specifically stated then I would take the sick day bc most companies have the "use it or lose it" sick day policy whereas you can roll over vacation to the next year.  I would just check with your HR rep to be sure, especially if your time is billable.

  • I work for the govt.  We can use our sick leave for ourselves or to care for a family member.

  • With my company, I can use my sick time for a sick child. Most of the time, DH takes the time off to care for our sick kids. He has waaay more time banked. BUT, his company JUST changed their policy to let you use your sick time to care for sick kids. Before, he had to use vacay or comp time.
