When and how did you wean DC from nursing to sleep?

My DS was a colicy baby and the only way to calm him during the evening hours would be nursing. Now there is no other way to get him to sleep at night other than nursing, otherwise he will cry for a good hour. I do not want to be the only one who can get him to sleep at night and I am worried that DS is dependent on nursing to sleep during his night awakenings as well. Any suggestions?

  • Sorry, no advice here, but I'll be watching because I'm in a similar situation!

  • Your baby is still too young to worry about sleep associations but you could try nursing to the point of drowsiness and then put him in the crib to drift off by himself. We did sleep training at around six months when I started separating nursing from her bedtime routine. Truth be told, I still nurse her to sleep for naps, though DH has success with rocking.

  • Ugh. I still havent.Embarrassed DD2 was also colicy and unsoothed by anything else.

We cosleep and it is just the most convinient thing for us. She is still nursing once a night at about 3am and then between 8 and 9 before breakfast.

One thing about nursing to sleep that you must be careful of is taking care of his teeth. Try and rinse out or clean babys teeth after he falls asleep. Or maybe a little water from a bottle. And start brushing early, even if he has no teeth, just to get him used to the feeling.

  • Your lo is still very young to have to worry about that. In time you can teach baby to self soothe but not so young. My son nursed to sleep until he was about nine months old and then he would nurse and I would put him down drowsy but he would go to sleep alone.
