I don't post here much but I would love some help. DS is 4 and has a lot of trouble with his colors. He was a 26 week preemie and we aren't sure if he is color blind.
How did you help your LO with colors? Does your 4 yo know all of their colors with no issues?
Re: Colors help
My 4 year old does know all of his colors with no problem but he also was in EI for speech and they are the ones who really taught him colors (part of working on his speech stuff). Now my almost 3 year old, whom I haven't really worked with other than pointing stuff out knows a few colors but most often just guesses
.
In your shoes what I would do
-Start with matching colors. Get some thick paper in bright colors, starting with vary different colors (like white, black, red, yellow). Cut into managable strips and work with DS on matching the same colors up. (this may also help you determine if he's color blind, after he masters that take the colors that color blind can't see and work on the matching, if can't match them but can other colors then ?).
-Move on to identifying colors. You can work on just picking out the colors. You can make it fun and cut them out like fish, put little magnets on them and then a magnet on a string and have him "fish" for certain colors.
-do what you can do make it fun, stacking the same colors of blocks, trains, ect. I think the trick is to incorporate it in a few different ways so that it's not boring for either of you.
Good luck!
My 4.5 year old knows all his colors... even the random ones like chartreusse, but I'm not sure at what point he learned them. When he was young we tried to teach them to him, but he never seemed to be able to remember them. We thought he was colorblind. It turned out, he knew them all along, but had learned it bothered us when he answered wrong (and I guess he liked that). We dropped the subject and came to realize that he knew them just fine. Maybe this is what's happening with your little man?
Either way I hope you get it figured out. Maybe he feels you are pushing too hard and feels pressured? I would find a good DVD that has colors on it, and let him try to learn from that approach instead.
