I have an appt for a hysterosalpingogram on Tuesday. I know it's a pretty benign test but I was just wondering if anyone had serious cramping or infection afterwards? I was advised to take antibiotics before the test. I also am wondering if anyone knows if it's ok to get pregnant after the test during that same month? It seems to me it would be fine as long as the dye is out of your system, but maybe it's best to hold off trying that month? Any advice is welcome. I know I have to bring a pad and some IB.

Re: HSG exam experiences?
I took some Ibuprofen before hand, remained as relaxed as possible during the exam which helped minimize the discomfort, and packed a pad for afterwards. I was able to watch the whole procedure on the screen and that was really neat IMO. My cramping afterwards was like the first day of my period and only lasted for 4-6 hours.
The doctor told me not to TTC that cycle but we did anyways.
IUI #1 10/12/11 (Bravelle + HCG + Prometrium & acupuncture) = 10/26 BFP! Beta #1=250, Beta #2= 615. 1st u/s 11/8.
Thanks everyone. I hope the cramping isn't too bad for me because I don't have anyone to go with me. My DH has had to take a lot of days off because of the IF appt coming up, and we are interviewing and observing at a new school for E, so maybe I am naive but I am trying to go for it by myself. I will take some pain medicine, and I will definitely get myself some ice cream or a milkshake on the way home
I am nervious, I think I will download one of my hypnobirth cds and try to do my relaxation with earphones.
My experience was like Ariel's: I has no blockages, yet the procedure was one of the most painful experiences in my life. It hurt a lot during and I was uncomfortable for awhile after: so much so, I had to recline my seat as far back as possible on the drive home. There's no way I could've driven home. By the way, I have a very high pain thresh-hold. I remember getting dressed thinking 'if I can't make it through this test, how am I going to make it through the rest of the procedures leading up to a baby.. And then pregnancy?'
Experiences vary on this test: for some it's no biggie, for others (like me) it's really bad. Sadly, you don't know which camp tou'll fall into. I know your DH can't join you, but can anyone else? At least to drive you home? You might also be ready to take a cab too.

I had to take an antibiotic beforehand. I think that is pretty standard procedure...
There was a lot of pressure during the procedure and then cramping afterwards that lasted a few hours. I was drugged up on IB before, during and after the procedure and the cramping was comparable to my worst menstrual cramps x10. DH was with me and I'm glad he was because I would not have been able to drive myself home.
Like the PP mentioned, everyone's experience is different and you just won't know until you get there. Any way to have someone on-call in case you need a ride home?
I am in this boat. It was so painful. No blockage. I have to get an SHG (saline one) in a few months and I am terrified to go through it again.
A, good news: the SHG is a breeze in comparison. I've had two, and while not awesome, closer to a pap smear discomfort. Relax about that one.

Thanks everyone. I won't say it was easy breezy but I definitely didn't have severe cramping afterward. I listened to a hypnotherapy app during the procedure which helped a lot. I guess I got lucky, thankfully. thanks for the warnings everyone. I appreciate it.
