we are done with formula

I am glad to not be buying it, but the milk we get her is still $5 for a half gallon!  But dang, the shelf life on it is amazing.  Not that we would ever be sitting around with it for that long, but still.  Aaaaaand...she likes it warmed.  That is so our fault for never getting her used to the cold RTF formula she was on.  She would do room temp sometimes, but if we want her to drink it all that stuff better be nice and warm!  Next challenge: getting her off the bottle (we have two sippy cups swapped in at daycare so far, but she definitely prefers the bottle) and getting her to drink it cold!

Re: we are done with formula

  • We are having the same problem with her not taking it cold. I had been mixing cold milk with freshly made formula, but when we made the switch to just milk she suddenly would not take it anymore. I finally figured out that she wanted it warm. I'm going to slowly start warming it less and less in hopes of weaning that habit.

She figured out how to use a sippy just a couple weeks ago. The day that she figured it out, we stopped giving her bottles. They are packed away waiting for baby #2 and I couldn't be happier about not having to see those things for another 5 months.

  • YAY, go Shiloh! It's nice I think to be done with it. Emily is getting close.

I couldn't believe the shelf life either. I'm embarassed to say I didn't realize it's not good that long once you open it. General rule of the thumb is one week after it's opened. It's always so hard to go through that much though.

  • I was almost sad to be done with formula. Even though I am happy to not pay for it anymore!  Whitney is getting about 24 oz of milk a day, and H and I drink a ton of it too. Im starting to think milk might be more expensive. lol.

I thought she would have an issue with the milk being cold too, but she didnt. Thank goodness! Good luck with the transition!

  • What milk are you guys giving that has really long shelf life?

JT takes his milk cold and in a sippy which is great - but I can only get 7 - 10 oz per day in him. He's still nursing 3 times per day...I thought he would be drinking more cow's milk...

  • Organic milk has a longer sell by date but once it is opened it should be used within 7 days.

Joshua has been off formula for a month.  He only wants warm milk in a bottle.  He gets 2 bottles a day one before his nap time and one before bed.  I know I am setting up a bad habbit.  I guess I am hindering him since I know he is my last baby and I don't want to give up snuggling him while he drinks a bottle.
