Unable to Produce Milk?

My mother was unable to produce milk. Now I am worried that I will have the same problem. I really have my heart set on breastfeeding. Is there any way to tell if I will be able to produce or do I just kind of have to wait and see when the baby is born?

Re: Unable to Produce Milk?

  • You pretty much have to wait and see. Try not to stress - you don't know what was going on with your mom that long ago. Things were very different. She could have been given a hormone shot (with or without her consent) to get rid of her milk. She might not have known it could take as long as 10 days for her milk to come in. The best thing you can do is become really educated about breastfeeding and know how to try your best.

  • Education is the best thing you can do for yourself. I would take a class on bfing with your dh so he can know how to support you when you are having a hard time. Also having skin to skin contact with your lo asap after birth and then nursing as soon as your lo starts routing around will help with your success with bfing.
