Any suggestions? We have the Chicco Keyfit 30..but she's getting too long for it, and we're coming on on the first birthday anyway (it went fast!)...so...what is a good follow up car seat? Also, if there are any that you would recommend we steer clear of, that is helpful too! Thanks. I'll still do the research, but I know the voice of experience is out there...:)
Re: Moving on from the infant car seat...
What kind of car(s) do you have? That may be relevant for size reasons. I have a Britax Roundabout in my car, and DH has a Britax Marathon in his car. (My car is a little smaller, so I went with the smaller carseat). We're very happy with both of them. The Marathon has a few extra features that are nice, but not essential, but it's also a little more expensive.
We have the Britax Marathon and I've been very happy with it. I agree with PP that the type of car you have is important. Some car seats take up quite a bit of space when they are rear-facing and can make it so you have to have your front seat pushed up all of the way. So, the size of you car makes a difference.
Other than that, I would say to just make sure you get a "convertible" carseat that can be rear- facing. You may already know about the new AAP guidelines that say children should be rear-facing until age 2 minimum but just in case, I wanted to mention it. DD is 2.5 and we still have her rear facing. In my old car, it sort of sucked because my knees were practically pushed into the glove compartment. So, I would focus on getting something that works with your car.
We have a Britax Marathon and the Boulevard. I like the Marathon a lot. The Boulevard is just a little too much bigger. It's in a minivan so the size doesn't matter too much, but the extra wings are just annoying when trying to get the child in the car seat.
My SIL bought the Sunshine Radian for my nephew and loves it. It's narrower and really does afford a lot more space in the rear of the car.
FYI, the Sunshine is now called a Diono Radian. I think they changed the name at the beginning of December, or sometime within the last few months. We have the seat, and it's been pretty good. My DD will be 3 this week, and she's still able to rear face in this seat.... which was important to me, because I believe in extended rear facing (plus, she has barfed every time we've put her FF... LOL)
If I wanted to spend less, I'd probably buy the Graco My Ride 65. It has similar height/weight limits for RF and FF.
My parents have a Cosco Scenera to use as a back-up seat for DD and her cousin when they're visiting. It gets pretty good safety ratings, and they only paid like $45 for it.
Remember that all seats sold in the US have to meet the same safety standard. So, other than fit in your car, ease of installation, and fit of your child, the brand you get doesn't (shouldn't) really matter.
This. Although, my DH believes that the more expensive something is, the better it is (rolls eyes), and so we have the Britax Advocate 70CS. I have nothing to compare it to, but I like it! I feel like a tank could hit my car and she'd be fine.
Hey you! We went from Graco infant carrier/seat to Britax Boulevard and now my oldest is in Britax Frontier. We've got the minivan now, so size didn't really matter.
Hope all is well lady!
