NBR: Indestructible dog bed?

We adopted a Pit mix in July and since then, we've gone through 6 dog beds. She'll do great at not chewing on it for the first week or two and then will start to pull the stuffing out. This past time that I had to replace it, I ended up throwing an old Queen size comforter in there that she's now shredded. She has a bone in there all the time and if we're going to be gone more than an hour or two, I'll stuff a Kong with kibble & PB. She did just turn one, so I'm hoping that as she outgrows the puppy phase, the chewing will stop...I don't have the heart to put her in there without something soft for her to lay on either.

Any ideas on how to either get her to stop shredding her bed or where to get an indestructible dog bed?

  • I recommend something like this.

I don't think something like that would fit in her crate :/ It's a great idea though!

  • Have you considered going bed-free? One of our pound puppies did the same thing, so we skipped the bed and tossed an old towel on the floor in her crate. She seems to do fine with it, and hasnt shredded it yet.

  • I'm a hard-a$$ doggy momma and don't give my dogs anything fluffy in their crate if they chew it up. Not only do I hate things getting ripped up, but I also worry about them eating some of the bed/stuffing and getting an intestinal blockage.

My older dog isn't even crated anymore during the day and she still chooses to take naps in her bare crate, so I honestly don't think she cares. Our other dog is a pittie mix and is our perfect angel (haha - not quite) and hasn't ever chewed anything up so he has a bed in his crate.

I feel like a jerk doing that, because given the choice she'll lay on anything [even a piece of paper, lol] to avoid laying on the floor. The chewing almost seems like a nervous habit - she shreds and then spits the fuzz out. I'm know she still could ingest some of it, but I don't think that's her intention.

  • I know someone with one of these and it's been good.

Oh! Sorry... didn't realize she was crated. The only thing that worked w/ my destructive dog in a crate was NOTHING. She chewed up towels, blankets, pillows, you name it. :-/

  • Our pit mixes have Kong beds for their crates. Do they still make them?  I haven't looked in awhile since they are holding up fantastic. Or mine have outgrown their chewing.
