Bwing in the winter

What does everyone put their LO's in if babywearing for errands in the cold? I have a plush snowsuit for DD but it can't be worn in the carseat so I just put her in a onesie and fleece footies (and a hat) for the two minute walk into the store. Am I missing some awesome product?

  • No clue but your DD is freakin adorable!

  • I bring the carseat (w/ it's fleecy/wind resistant cover) is with me if it's cooler than about 45 or windier than 30 mph. Otherwise, I just get him in the sling as quickly as I can and go.

  • DD was 7 months last December (2010) and I would put her in the Ergo front carry and cover her with my coat. Those 1 or 2 minutes it is going to take to get her in the carrier isn't going to hurt them, even if they don't wear a coat. I would go for walks with DD in freezing weather. I would put her in the Ergo, wear my too big winter coat and put a hat on her (she would not wear a coat).

  • When DD was that age I'd put the ring sling or stretchy wrap under DH's coat, put DD in then close my coat around the two of us.  I'd put regular outerwear on her...but a somewhat lighter layer.

You could also consider a babywearing coat like a Peekaru or Suse's Kindercoat.

We often commute(d) by light rail.  In these pictures she's wearing a jacket and a hat.  I would sometimes put legwarmers on her so that her pants legs wouldn't ride up.

This.  I bought an XL coat on clearance at Old Navy for $17.  I wear it over the both of us.  For the carseat issue, we use a poncho (www.carseatponcho.com).  It is very warm and doesn't get in the way of the straps.

  • Ditto the PPs who said they put the carrier on and then their coat. I have a jacket that has enough room to zip up over DS when we get him in there from the carseat.

The other thing I do (works best with the Moby) is take one of his fleece blankets and tuck it in the top of the moby (where his chest is, when he's facing out) then wrap it under his feet and tuck the sides of the blanket in the fabric that's against my body, creating a little sleeping bag effect.

  • If it's really cold I use a fleece bunting suit (it's thin enough for the carseat straps). If it's just a little cold then a fleece jacket over a one piece outfit. Even a minute or two is wayyyyy to long to be out when it's really cold. When it's below about -20 I use the carseat with cover.
