How are OTC prenatals different from RX?

Is there a difference?  I've been taking OTC gummies for the last 10 months, but doc offered to write a RX.

Thoughts?

  • I got prescription prenatals b/c they contail DHA which my dr recommended..........I'm sure any of them are fine though :)

  • I've honestly never understood this either.  I started taking the gummies last time b/c the others made me sick.  My doctor was okay with it until the 2nd trimester.  He then made me, as he put it, get on big girl prenatals (RX) then.  He's having me do the same thing this time as well.

  • My husband is military so with our Tricare insurance it's actually cheaper to get the RX prenatals at $5 a bottle than the over the counter :)
  • I got the over the counter with dha

We actually have a local pharmacy that fills PNs for free, and it is not dependent on your income, so for me, the RX was cheaper. However, because it comes in a RX bottle, I have NO CLUE what the difference is.

  • Our local grocery store's pharmacy does them for free as well.  I think it's to try and get people to move their prescriptions over from places like Walgreens and CVS.  My doctor told me about it.  You all might ask your doctor if any pharmacies in your town do this as well.

  • I'm taking the Naturemade (OTC) liquid gels with DHA. I take them in the morning with food and they haven't been making me sick.

  • I've been taking Nature Valley OTC prenatals and fish oil supplement to get the DHA.  Is that acceptable?  I'm sure doctor might recommend something else tomorrow.

  • I take prescription (Neevo DHA) because of my problems with folic acid, and the ones I am on are specifically for women with this problem.  They help your body absorb folic acid, as some women are not able to absorb it and it never gets to the baby.   My doctor put me on them with my last pregnancy and told me to continue them.

The difference between my vitamins and OTC vitamins obviously is huge, but I have not clue about any other Rx brand prenatals.  It just depends on which one the doctor wants to put you on, as they are different.

  • the laws have changed if you are using a flexible spending account.  some require a prescription to get reimbursed.  i don't think it matters what brand you get, just that your doctor prescribes them to show it's not elective.  that could be why your doctor offered.

  • I take RX ones because they are free at Meijer, where I fill my prescriptions anyway. Free is nice and there are no income requirements to get them for free, so I'm all about it!

  • I don't think there's a difference. The amounts of vitamins in them were almost the same in mine.  I'm taking OTC right now, but I will get the RX after my appointment because several grocery stores in the area offer free prenatals.

  • Wish places where I live would offer them free =(.  Mine are $50 a month so that would be so awesome to get them for free!
