If DS is absolutely losing it, I will take him out of his crib for 5-10 min and try again. It isn't necessarily how long he has been crying for, more what type of cry it is. If I know it is a sleepy cry and that he will fall asleep soon, I will leave him. But if he is screaming his face off for more than a minute, I'll take him out and try again.

Twin boys born too early at 17w4d and 18w2d in February 2010
Transabdominal cerclage placed September 2010
DS born at 35w1d in February 2011
Twin girls born at exactly 36w in February 2013
We followed Healthy Sleep Habbits Happy Child, which says 1 hour. It has never taken that long though. Morning nap takes about 5 minutes of complaining (not really screaming, just fussing) and afternoon depends on his mood - sometimes 5 sometimes 30 - but then he will sleep an hour or so.
For DS I found a 45 minute cut off worked better. He tended to fall asleep at the 30-35 minute mark. I also found the check ins didn't work for him. For naps I had to do full extinction. Every kid is different.
If he is hysterical crying I pull him out after 10 minutes or so and try again later. Usually he's just crying because he's pissed about having to take a nap.

Ferber suggests a 30 minute cut off.
