We are thinking of getting our kids an Ipod Touch and DSi for their March birthdays. My son will be turning 6, my daughter will be turning 4. In theory, we will get one one of the gifts, and get the other the other gift, then they will share. Seems crazy, but times have changed, right????????????
Re: How young is too young for Ipod Touch
We just got one for my 11 yr old, my almost 7 year old might get one next Christmas,
I just don't think a 4 year old is responsible enough for that expensive of a "toy".
Thanks for your input. I tend to agree with you...looking into the leappad version, but it isn't cheap as far as true toys go and i feel they will outgrow it fairly soon, interest-wise...
Thanks again
IMO, depends on the kid. My DD has had one for about a year (right before she turned 5) and we have had zero issues. She knows how to charge it, handle it and the expectations. She has had no problems following the rules with it. She knows how easily it can break and she honestly treats it better than I treat my iPhone.
She is not perfect, sometimes it gets lot in the mess of her room, sometimes it runs out of charge because she forgets to plug it in. But she knows this is HER responsibility.... So it honestly does not happen often.
I have it set so she can't delete apps and she does NOT know the password so she cannot buy anything. No way is she ready for that - not a chance!

To me a DSi is more expensive once you add a few games and it is probably more fragile than a Touch. I know some think I am nuts but my Mom got my 5 and 3yos them for Christmas but they do not take them out of the house without us knowing (so far at least) and put them back in the same place 95% of the time, they have FaceTime on them so we can call them if we cannot find them like today when DH brought them to my Mom's house and DD was responsible enough to put it back in my purse when she was done but DH and I did not know so we were looking for it.
FWIW I would get them both the same game, either a Touch or DSi but not one for each, I do not see sharing happening, instead I see a ton of fighting in your future. And DSi games would probably be different for those ages. I personally prefer the Touch b/c you can download a ton of free games and some upgrades to $1.99 games one time and they both them the game instead of paying $20-40 each game. Oh, and DD loves the BOB Books app.
Ok, I must know the name of this app! My DS has had his touch since he was 2 or 3, he wasn't really your typical 2 or 3 year old though, I realize this now after being around other toddlers. It has gotten lost but always in the house and he is very responsible with it.
This post makes me realize I am so screwed when my kids are older.
We have very limited technology in our house. I wouldnt even know what an ipod touch is if I saw one. LOL. We have one outdated cell phone that cant even take pictures, a computer, and nothing else. My kids play with mostly wooden toys and we own no video game systems. I dread the days when they start asking me for this stuff.
I'm going to back out of this post with my hands over my eyes now.
I have the "Find iPhone" app on my phone. DH put it on for me, although I don't really know how it works. That may be the one you're looking for.
DH gave DD1 his old iPhone a couple months ago. She's been very responsible with it, but we do remind her often to be careful where she puts it.

My daughter will be 6 in March, and she's had one for over a year.
It wasn't new, though - we gave her our old one when we got iPhones (and an iPad). We had no use for it anymore. Deleted our stuff from it, and she probably has 100 apps (games) on there for her. She even asked for a gift card for Christmas (iTunes) so she could buy a few games she liked
She handles it REALLY really well and we've had NO issues. I take care of the buying/password stuff. But she knows how to charge it. She knows it's expensive and knows she needs to be careful with it. I actually think it helped teach her responsibility for items.. and it occupies her with lots of educational games (and some plain old fun ones).
