recommend good, fairly inexpensive small stroller

We only have one stroller (city mini) and it's fine except for the times when it's in DH's car (we store it there so we don't have to carry it down the steps in front of our house) and I'd like to be able to take LO out without carrying or wearing him, so I am finally going to buy an extra to keep in my car.

Any suggestions?

  • I'm not sure how inexpensive you want, but I'm happy with my Maclaren Triumph. The Volo is similar and a little cheaper. They have more features than some cheapo umbrella strollers, like a sun shade and small basket underneath.

  • I'll second the Volo. It is a good mix of lightweight/easy to use/sturdy for situations like you are describing. I brought DD to NYC once or twice a month on the train when she was little, and the Volo was my go-to stroller for those trips. It held up well all over NY, and was light enough for me to manage the stroller, luggage, and squirmy kid on the train.

I'm not sure how much it costs now, but it was ~$100 5 years ago.

  • Another vote for the Volo.  $100+ may seem like a lot for an umbrella stroller, but we bought ours 6 years ago and it has survived 2 kids and been through numerous airports and metro stations.  It's durable, lightweight, easy to fold up and sufficient for almost any excursion.  I think of it as one of the best $125 I spent on anything kid related.
  • until warner was about 15 months old, our only stroller was the city mini. then I picked up a cheap $20 umbrella stroller from BRU only because we were going to an Oriole game and I wanted something that I could fold up and put under my seat. honestly, it's been a great little stroller. It's lightweight and pretty durable. My only complaint is that as a tall person, the handles aren't quite as high as I would like, but I don't use it enough for it to bother me.

they still sell it, here is a link:

I think we have the same one that bh linked to (or similar).  Our problem with our cheap one is also height...  And, we're not even that tall.

For our next baby (no, I'm not preggo), I think I'll get this one - solves the height problem!

  • I couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a Maclaren (Although I've since seen a few at Home Goods for a great price) so we bought a Combi Flare (it was on sale and I used a coupon at BuyBuyBaby, I think it came to about $50). IT has traveled everywhere and has ended up being our go to stroller for the past 2 years. Folds up, has a carrying strap and is light weight.
