Question for **AmyG**

Sorry I couldn't get my computer to do this in a PM...are you a LC?

I am considering a career change and I would like some info on becoming an LC.  I've tried googling, but I don't get very reliable information.  Do you have any info on how to become a LC?

I originally thought you had to be a nurse but I *think* I've seen that you don't have to be one...is that true?

Re: Question for **AmyG**

  • I've looked at it a little - you don't have to be a nurse, but to be IBCLC has a bunch of univeristy/college level requirements unless you already completed them (like, by being a nurse, dietician, pharmacist, etc).

    The info is all here:

AmyG is just a passionate peer educator, I believe. I'm looking into LLL leadership as a hobby, as I don't have most of the university requirements and I can't go back to school right now. I also know that job opportunities in my city would be really limited as a non-nurse LC.

  • Thanks!  I would love to get more involved with LLL, but I don't know if I can be a "leader" since I'm not actually BFing.

You know that whole "do what you love and it won't be a job" spiel every time you were in a career development class in high school?  Yeah that's kinda what got me thinking.  I spend more time thinking about BFing and how to help people than actually working lol.  So maaaaayyyyyyybee I should look into doing it for a career.

    Yup what she said.

11+ years of breastfeeding advice online.

About the time I thought hard about becoming an IBCLC they changed the requirements, it used to be a bit easier to do it without really having to be a medical professional, or have that kind of training.

Of course, in my state and in most states I could open a business and hang up a sign calling myself a Lactation Consultant because overall it's not regulated, and getting the IBCLC designation is optional.  Of course there are other places that "certify" you with some training, but IBCLC is the gold measure.

the change seems to be eliciting a lot of LC's that look at breastfeeding from a very very medicalized viewpoint--including a lot more/or just seems like more advice in recent years to pump cause that's what drs have often said to do whenever there is a latch or weight gain issue--like "just pump" is an answer.

That's what got me thinking - after EP'ing for 10 months, I finally realize the problems that prevending me from actually nursing!  So now DD and I are going to be working on nursing "from the tap" so to speak.

There's a lot of bad advice out there and I would love to make sure that any advice I give is not only correct, but helpful in the long term.  I would love to help out more in my local area because the BFing rates are so low, but there's so much bad information.  Its a vicious cycle.
