Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sippy Cup Help

We just recently started solids, and DS poop has gotten so hard and nuggety it tore him a little on the way out, and now you can see he tries to push, then starts screaming and holds it in. I'm trying to give him water and introduce the sippy cup but he's not having it. Any tips on getting him to take a sippy cup, I need to get a little water in him to soften up that poop.

Re: Sippy Cup Help

  • DD didn't want anything to do with sippy cups until recently. She has had constipation troubles since we started her on solids. I put a little prune juice in with her morning bottle and it has helped tremendously.

  • DS still isn't a fan of the sippy cup at 9 months.  Believe it or not, he prefers drinking out of a regular cup (obviously with our help).  If your main concern is softening stools and not so much learning how to a sippy cup, maybe try giving him water in other ways?

Also, just an FYI... Pears and blueberries help make DS's stools nice and soft.

  • I tried adding a little prune juice and he got it in his mouth and started gagging uncontrollably and shaking his head and wouldn't  open again lol. And we wanted to do both, more fluid and try the sippy cup. He won't sip it from a regular cup and will only take BM or F from a bottle, everything else gets spit out.

  • if you're concerned about getting water into him (on advice of your pedi), then give him water through a bottle instead.

if you're just wanting advice on general sippy cup use, we used a straw cup instead and it worked great.  She was sucking on the sippy, but wasn't tipping it back, so I figured a straw cup would work better.  She took to it right away.  Playtex makes ones for 4+ months.

  • It sounds like he is breastfeed from a bottle like my daughter.  She isn't a pro at the sippy cup either.  I have actually added prune juice to my menu everyday to help her out and that seems to work.  I add it to my OJ in the morning to sweeten it up.

  • Have you tried prunes?  They are actually DD's favorite food so far!

  • i'd also stop any rice cereal you're giving, as that is a prime food for constipation.  our DD is easily constipated, so we skipped rice all together and did oatmeal for her first food.  as soon as she started purees though, we ditched the oatmeal too.

  • First, "p" foods will help with the constipation, if you've already introduced them - prunes, pears, plums, peaches. Apples, bananas, and rice will make it worse (think of the BRAT diet for diarrhea).

Second, what kind of sippy are you using? DD1 didn't take to sippies at first because we were using a hard spout (Playtex First Sipsters). We switched to the Nuk Learning Cup and it clicked almost instantly for her. You might have to help him tip it up still, but the Nuk cup has a softer spout, so it's easier for them to figure out how to suck on it.

At Target, it's in the bottle aisle, not with the other sippies.

I think even though you started pureed foods you are supposed to give them rice cereal because they need the iron.
