Labor without losing MP?

So... I think I might be having contractions- I've been timing for about two hours just because they felt so consistent and for about the past 40 minutes they've been about 5 minutes apart... but they feel exactly like what I've come to recognize as BH contractions and I have no idea if they're real.  One way I'm trying to tell is that I have seen no sign of losing my MP and I was wondering if it was possible for labor to start without losing the MP because it seems like most people I've heard/read have mentioned losing it days or weeks before going into labor.  Anyone know? TIA!

Re: Labor without losing MP?

  • I never lost it (at least that I know of) with either labor. Until my water broke, I had not bleeding or discharge. Good luck! The contractions should keep getting more intense/closer together, but early labor can last awhile. Do they change at all with a warm bath, walking around or rest?

  • I started having menstural like crampy contrax on Wed evening that continuted through yesterday.  At times they'd get to be 3-5 mintues apart for up to 3 hours at a time.  I lost my mucus plug yesterday and I've hardly had any contrax since.

It is possible to go into labor without losing your mucus plug or having bloody show.  Are your contrax to the point where you can't talk through them?  That's usually an indication that it's real labor and not just prelabor or BH.

  • Thanks to both of you! They don't feel like they're getting more intense but it also seems to not be at all affected by changing position or doing anything else. They're a little more intense than I've felt before with my BH but I feel like it's only because they're so consistent.  Thanks for your help, I guess I'll just keep timing and see if I can fall asleep tonight.

  • I never saw evidence that I lost my MP, so don't use that as a gauge. You'll know when you start having real contractions, trust me. Wink Mine started out feeling like really bad menstrual cramps and then went to a whole new level. I'm not saying this to scare you - my labor progressed very quickly and by the time the hospital staff gave me the epidural, I was already basically fully dilated and ready to push (they didn't realize I had progressed so fast). My experience is definitely not "typical" but then again, I don't think there is a "typical" labor experience. My best advice is to trust your body. My water broke the morning my son was born, but apparently didn't all come out (I had no way to know what was normal since this was our first baby). They almost sent me home when I had been at the hospital for a little while because they said I still had plenty of amniotic fluid and they thought I was only in the early stages of labor and could go home for several hours until things progressed further. While waiting for the doctor's official report, my labor went into overdrive. Needless to say, I'm glad we didn't leave. My water broke at 11 am and our son was born at 8:58 pm that night.

  • I don't know. I never really noticed it with my first at all and haven't seen anything yet this time that is definite. I think that unless you examine the toilet VERY closely every time you go, you might easily miss it. Also it could come out in pieces rather than one big blobby thing.

I'm pretty sure you can go into labor without noticing your MP loss, or even losing it. Your contractions are starting to dilate you (hopefully!) and the MP is released as your cervix dilates and effaces... so if you're just beginning to open and thin, it could still be there even if you're in labor.

All that said, I had several hours of very consistent, somewhat uncomfortable BH contractions last week - 1 min. long and 3 mins apart. They did NOTHING to my cervix.  BAH!  :) Good luck!!

I know that can be the case for some women, however for me there was no way I could have possibly missed it!  TMI alert:  I passed a ton of mucus and continued to pass more for the next 24 hours.  There was so much I had to keep wiping and wiping and wiping.  It was totally gross, yet somewhat fascinating at the same time.  (I have a previous medical background so bodily functions and fluids intrigue me)

  • I lost mine with my first about 5 days before labor.  And this time I never lost it (that I saw).  So it's totally not necessary for you to know it's gone and to be in labor! Good luck!!

But I will also say; I had a LOT of BH for weeks and weeks leading up to my labor.  But when true labor started and I got those contractions it made me remember how different those feel.  The BH don't really HURT even though they can be VERY uncomfortable.  But the labor pains...well let's just say unless you're a lucky woman...you'll know.

  • I never lost mine until I was in full blown labour.  About 3 hours after my water broke.  The nurses told me I was having Braxton hicks, but they were real because I somehow dilated from 0-5cm in a couple of hours.  Mine didn't start really hurting enough that I couldnt talk through them until 7cm.

  • I never lost a discernible plug.  I had runny mucus for a couple of days before going into labor but it was never the apparent semi-solid that some folks have.
