Addison is here.... (a little long)

I know I haven't posted as regularly as some of you, but I thought I would jump on and share my birth story.

On Friday, Jan. 13th my OB put me on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy due to increasing blood pressure.  She told me she would most likely end up inducing me between 37 and 39 weeks (I was just under 37 weeks at the time).  I went back in for another check up on Monday the 16th and everything looked great.  She did another U/S, an NST test, the 24 hour urine collection, etc.  She was so encouraged that everything looked so good she told me I would likely be able to go to full-term after all provided my blood pressure didn't go any higher.  We left the appointment thinking we had at least a few more weeks to go.  I stopped by school to talk with my temporary sub (I'm a teacher and wasn't quite prepared to be done already).  We grabbed some lunch and came home to eat.

After we were done eating, I felt a small pop and when I stood up I knew my water had broken.  I had a gush come out and knew I hadn't peed my pants.  I told my DH to get my phone.  I called my OB and she told me to come back into the clinic but to be prepared to head to the hospital.  We still hadn't packed our bags yet, so we frantically threw things in a bag and rushed to the clinic.  When we got there, there was no question this was the real deal- I had no idea how much fluid would continue to come out of me- I kept gushing.  She sent us right to the hospital.

I got to the hospital around 3:30 and got settled into my room.  I was positive on the strep test and because my water had already broken my OB recommended I start pitocin.  I didn't start having any contractions until about 5:30.  I had a feeling I would have a fast labor as my mom was very fast with me and my brothers (by fast I mean she delivered all of us within 2 hours of getting to the hospital).  I was prepared to do a natural birth as much as I could handle it.  Contractions got strong really quickly- I felt them all in my rectum... not what I expected.  They were coming quickly and more intensely and I didn't really get a break between them.  The doctor tried to check me a couple of times, but it was hard to check me because I was contracting so rapidly.  At about 8:00 I was 4-5 cm dilated.  I was just about to give up and I asked for an epidural as I was so uncomfortable.  They suggested I try a narcotic first to see if that would take the edge off (I tried it and it did nothing for me).  I think they knew there would be no time for an epidural as I was progressing so fast.  They checked me again at 8:45 and I was 8-9cm dilated.   Within about 5 more minutes I was ready to push.  Addison was born at 9:40 pm.  She was 2 hours and 20 minutes short of being 37 weeks.  She weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and was 21 inches long.

The whole experience happened so fast... I still can't believe she is here with us.  We are all doing great and are adjusting to our new family of three.
