Registry- Which baby items did you ultimately have to purchase?

I understand that there are different comfort levels with spending, gifts, baby showers etc. I am planning on purchasing my nursery furniture secondary to higher costs. If I am lucky enough to be gifted these items, well, of course I will welcome it! So, I am wondering what items did you ultimately end up having to purchase on your own, things you needed either before or shortly after the baby comes?

I know this will vary from person to person, but I am trying to plan everything in my mind and I am having a hard time holding back from buying things, especially when I see a good deal online! Sigh.

  • I bought myself the Ergo because I saw it on Babysteals, and we bought our own nursery furniture.

My MIL bought us the infant car seat and bases and stroller, but I have a huge chunk of a kid who really hated the infant seat, so bought a convertible seat for him when he was just a few months old.  I bought my own diaper bag b/c I wanted something specific that was costly (although, I regret it, don't use it, and am thinking about CLing it =/).

Oh, and because he was long and skinny, he fit into newborn stuff, but nothing with feet...so we ended up having to go on a very specific clothing search for a few things for him when he was less than a week old.  But that's not something you can really plan for, ha.  I do think though that I didn't have enough (and didn't think I needed) newborn sized clothing.  He definitely needed size NB for the first two weeks or so.  0-3 months was big on him and he was almost 8 lb at birth.

I also bought all my own pumping and BFing stuff and nursing tanks, bras, etc.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of right now. GL!

  • Out of the bigger/pricy items, we bought the carseat, breastpump, pnp, swing, and high chair. I had help buying the breastpump because my mom's aunt generously gave us a video monitor which we didn't need, so returning that paid for about 3/4 of the pump.

  • Most things on our registry (bigger items) were bought for us.  I did buy my own pump.  We bought the nursery furniture ourselves (it wasn't on our registry).  The things we actually needed and weren't bought for us were the smaller items (gas drops, burp cloths, shampoo/lotion/diaper cream, swaddles, those types of things.  We also got a TON of newborn and 0-3 month clothes and both my boys grew out of them soo quickly.  I wish we would have gotten more 3-6 month or older clothing.

  • We were gifted our co-sleeper (from the registry), crib (not on our registry), stroller, a used pump, and later on a jumperoo and awesome bouncy seat.  We kept our registry sort of light, knowing that people would buy what they liked and we'd likely buy all the key stuff ourselves.

I bought DS's infant seat myself when I found the one I wanted on sale.  Same with his bedding (which he never used!).  We got a bunch of our registry stuff but also dupes of stuff on our registry that I was able to return for other stuff.

I got a TON of bath stuff (toiletry sets I didn't want to use, a million wash cloths, two tubs, toys, etc) but not very many clothes.  I had 6 bath towels but no swaddling blankets.

It all worked out because I exchanged the dupes for stuff I liked anyway but it still sort of makes me laugh.  Two relatives who are sort of competitive both bought us baby tubs and filled them to the brim with bath stuff, trying to out do the other I think.

  • crib/crib mattress and changing table were the big ones we had to buy but we got the crib/changing table cheap on craigslist.

  • Pump and pump accessories were the big things we bought (once BFing was established,) then we stocked up on a bunch of small misc. stuff - burp cloths, onesies, socks etc.

  • We bought the crib/mattress/bedding and dresser, carseat w/extra base, travel system stroller (which I ended up not liking and sold on CL), humidifier, and a bunch of smaller things. We received an exersaucer, bouncy seat, tub, bottles, steam sterilizer, and lots of blankets and clothing at my showers. My BFF handed us down her pump, cosleeper, snuggle nest, glider, and lots of other great things since she was done with them. I agree with the pp about keeping the registry light with mostly essentials and wish we had done that.

  • Make sure you still put all this stuff on the registry b/c you usually get a completion coupon.

I can't remember what was bought for us/ we bought though. I have terrible memory for that stuff.

  • We purchased all the larger items - crib, dresser, stroller, breast pump. Our parents gave us the glider and swing. We got an Arms Reach Cosleeper and carseat w/base as hand me downs along with a ton of clothing. With the exception of the swing, we did not register for those items. The items received at the shower were the smaller items - bathtub and bath supplies, clothing, blankets and swaddling blankets, teethers and rattles, jumperoo, exersaucer, etc.
