Shopping bags

Admittedly I am not the most eco-friendly person out there, but I am striving to make changes.  One of the first things I NEED to do is switch over completely to reusuable shopping bags.  I've been poking around online, and then I glanced at the side of my normal board (June 2011) and noticed this board and thought you ladies may be of some help!

Anyway, I need to buy some resuable shopping bags.  And, not to sound too stuck-up, bonus points if they're nice looking!

Does anyone have suggestions on GOOD reusable shopping bags out there.  By good I mean, not the cheapy ones that grocery stores sell that break in a few weeks.  Also, if they can be rolled up or something to keep in my purse that's another bonus.  DH and I interchange our cars based on who's leaving first or whatever so I don't want to leave them in my car.  Inevitably I'll have to run errands when they're in the car I'm NOT in!

TIA!

Envirosax and Baggu make really cute ones and different sizes. I have a ton of both of them, plus some acme & chicco bags.

I really love my string bags, they hold so much! I also take them to the pool/beach, when toting stuff to work, taking my crock-pot to a family dinner, etc. Very versatile because they aren't as structured.

These are the colored ones, you can also get them in "natural" -  https://www.reuseit.com/store/ecobags%C2%AE-pastel-cotton-string-shopping-with-hemp-stuffsack-p-18.html?slave_id=340

I also have a couple canvas bags that are nice because some smaller items can fall through the string-bag holes. The holes in the string-bags aren't very big, but a toothbrush or candy bar might be able to fall through.

Oh, and I HATED the Chico-brand polyester bag. I have 1, I rarely use it (maybe 5 times total), it seems flimsy and I'm just waiting for the stitching to give-out. Luckily that one I got for free so I didn't waste my money.

I like my cheap-o ones from the grocery store as far as functionality. I've never had one fall apart and I've had them for 4 years. My only complaint with them is I can't wash them. I also have some bags that I made from t-shirts. Those are my favorite. I guess you could make those nice-looking. I'm all for inexpensive or free.

We have two large cooler bags from Whole Foods, one in red and one in black. They're very pretty/cool to look at. We keep one in each car for cold stuff, but we'll also grab one for picnicking - it has a strap you can adjust for cross-body.

The bags I use the most often are canvas bags from WF or Trader Joes. They're not super chic, but some of them are very nice looking. I used to get the cheaper recycled-plastic ones, but I realized that I use the canvas ones more frequently, and you can wash them.

We keep the canvas bags rolled up inside the cooler bag in each car. We started with the cooler bag and just kept adding to it every week or two. We were living in the city, and it is a PITA to try and carry tons of plastic bags home. The canvas ones don't dig into your hands as much, and some have longer straps that you sling over your shoulder. That's how we got started. Now as I get a new bag that can be reused, I toss it into one of the cars and add it to the collection.

LOVE the envirosax  https://www.envirosax.com/. They are cute lightweight and can be stuffed into a smaller sac.  Also, with a carabiner they can clip onto the shopping cart with out taking up precious cart space.  They are also machine washable.  They can also be convenient because they can fit in your purse for shopping other than groceries.

Good luck! It get's addicting after a while and you will be frustrated when you come home with plastic.
