Give me your favorite neutrals (paint colors)

I am sick of my house and decided I'm repainting the common areas. Shockingly DH hasn't protested even though I told him I'm hiring a painter, so I'm going to try to get this rolling asap before he recovers his sanity.

I'm kind of leaning towards a gray, but I'm really open to almost anything. I am so bad at decorating - I know what I like when I see it, but I am just awful at putting it together myself. So, what do you guys like? Pictures if you have them would be great!

Re: Give me your favorite neutrals (paint colors)

  • When we moved into our house every.single.wall. was yellow or green. Horrible pukey shades of yellow and green. I wanted to paint everything a neutral gray-ish color. We chose Oatlands Subtle Taupe (which isn't really taupe) for the whole interior. I have received lots of complements on it. Plus, it is a Historic Preservation color, so it stands the test of time. Let me see if I can find a picture to post...

  • i don't have a specific color to recommend, but if you're hiring someone i'd ask them. our painter was really helpful with colors. or go to a paint store like benjamin moore and ask them. they get those requests all the time and can recommend popular neutral colors.

  • Pittsburgh Paints has a really cool program where, for a $50 deposit, they'll send out an interior decorator to your house for an hour to help you pick paint colors.  Then, they'll credit you that $50 towards a paint purchase.  Their paint isn't the cheapest, so you could always buy $50 worth of their paint then take the samples you've chosen to Home Depot (or somewhere cheaper) and get the rest.

We did this back in the summer with most of the rooms in our house and I could not be happier with results.  We went with a gray/blue color in our living room (at her suggestion) called Tempered Steel (a PP color).  It's very subtle, but the blue accents in our room pull out the blue a bit.

  • Mine is more of a builders tan. My mother's house is painted in Natural Wicker. I believe it's Glidden. It's soft and on the beige side but has a gray undertone.

  • I'm not a fan of the beige; we reprinted ours last year to Chelsea Gray from Sherwin Williams and love it. Neutral, but it brightens up the space.

  • Ooh, that's a neat idea having PP come out and give you ideas. I would have done that if I'd known it was an option before painting.

I swatched over a dozen colors in my LR before I painted, so I am of no assistance in recommending one color. Except maybe swatch before you paint bc my friend used my same color in her house and it looks terrible with her lighting.

  • If you're down with tans, we use Gobi Desert by Behr.  We used it for years in our rental properties and I was dead set against it for our house.  Well, the color I picked out was just about the same so we just went with GD b/c we had it and it looks great.
