Bottle Nipple Size ?

My daughter is 9 months now and is attending daycare. As such, they feed her pumped breast milk by bottle. I have kept her on size 1 nipples for her bottles out of fear that if she got the milk too fast by bottle, she'd lose interest in the breast. This morning when I dropped her off at daycare, the lead teacher said she's losing interest in the bottle and suggested we move up in size. She said that kids her age are typically on size 3 by now.

Did you increase your nipple size for bottles? Did it have any impact on breastfeeding? I feel like the most important thing is that she continue to get breast milk, so if she's losing interest in the bottle, then she will need more solids, which is fine, but breast milk is so much more complete and what she needs at this age. That said, I don't want her to lose interest in the breast altogether.

Any input on your experience would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Re: Bottle Nipple Size ?

  • We switched from Small to Medium when LO was about 4 months old and have had no problem with BFing as a result. I think at this point you'd be fine to move up one size, but no need to jump two sizes ahead.

  • We moved up to stage 2 around 4-5 months and she was just fine with it until she had a bottle strike at 8 months and is refusing to drink out of a bottle now (a completely different story but at least she's still nursing just fine)
