What kind of fabric do you recommend for cloth napkins? Most cloth napkins I've used are not very absorbent and kind of annoy me. Would flannel work?
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.

I like cotton for an all-purpose cloth napkin, personally. I wouldn't expect them to pick up any big spills, but we have dish towels for that. Jersey seems too thin to use, but it's worth a try. I would think flannel would pill too much and the fuzzies would stick to your mouth. Also, in my experience, the higher quality cloth napkin you buy, the longer it lasts.
Oh, one more suggestion: flour sack cloths?
I miss you lite-brite!
