WWYD?

So tonight at dinner, Evie told us that one time she saw a picture of a girl at the beach and she was not wearing a bathing suit.   "Isn't that silly?"

I tried to press her for where she saw this picture and she concocted this story about how she saw it in a store in New York City with her cousin.   We were in NYC 6 months ago with my niece.

Do you think she really saw a picture of a naked woman while in NY and why is she bringing it up now?  Or do you think she saw something recently and is putting two memories together?

On top of this, today she stripped two barbies naked and had them kissing.  I tried hard not to have a horrified look on my face while I talked to her about what they wanted to wear next.

Should I be worried about what she may have seen?

Re: WWYD?

  • Short answer: No. Nothing to worry about. And yes. Yes it's silly (as Evie said).

Heck, she could've seen a picture at a museum of someone naked at the beach. And even if she did see such a picture, is it it that much of a big deal? My dad says that when I was 3, I was fascinated with a book of Picasso's nudes. I just wanted to "look at the hiney."

And you don't EVEN want to know what kinds of things my sister and I did with our Barbies.

  • My concern here isn't so much with her seeing nudity. We aren't prudes and she sees nakedness every day. My concern is that I don't know the nature of the picture. If it was just a woman topless at the beach and it was innocent enough, I don't care. But if it was sexual in nature- then I care. I know she could have very easily seen something while in ny. We walked through the village and it's -oh what's the word?- lets just say open and expressive. So who knows. But why is she bringing it up now? Poor dh. He just looked at me like "I don't know!". Of course the obvious question was "could she have perhaps seens something on your computer?". He swears no.
  • I get what you are saying. My worry here would not be that she saw what she says she saw - that's fine

My worry (because I watch way too much SVU) is that some crazy pedophile showed her purposely inappropriate images with the express goal of being innapropriate.  I would be much more concerned with knowing how/where/when/why she saw something that provoked her actions today, rather than the images themselves. Chances are they are innocent. But that .01% chance that they are something Elliott Stabler would need to look into, and that is what I would be worried about.

The image itself wouldn't worry me at all. The person who showed her that image is what I would be looking into. If it was just her cousin: no big deal. If it was some random guy, BIG DEAL.

    Does that make sense?

  • I would not worry! I have found that my kids do or say things somewhat inappropriate when they are ready to know more info about their bodies, feelings, growing up things! I died one day when Kate was three? She was at her Sunday school class and she drew a picture of a naked person literally boobs nipple and hair in the nether region! When I picked her up she kept saying it is you mommy it is you. Wasn't until I was in the car I realized what she had done?, I was mortified! In the end it gave me a great opportunity to teach her about her private parts and how they need to be covered when not bathing and such. It was a great teachable moments. I knew then my kids would guide me when they are ready for growing up talks.
  • I think this is a phase, both developmental and expressive. I have noticed in the past few months E will bring up random memories that he had no real interest in at the time and didnt mention them when happening, but is mentioning them now. He called EB a drama queen the other day and I asked him where he heard that and he said his cousin called her that. He hasnt seen this cousin since September and has never mentioned this before. He has also started telling me about things he saw on vacation this past summer that I know he saw, but we never talked about because they werent really noteworthy, just randomness.

I wouldnt worry a bit. I really think it is the age and a lot of developmental changes going on.

  • This sounds totally normal to me.  It's all part of the developmental / experimental stuff they go through.

  • I agree, I am sure it is innocent enough.  As long as she thinks it was silly and doesn't start talking about actual porn or girls doing actions I would shrug it off. Maybe I would mention it to your niece or talking more with her about it if she brings it up more.  When I was about 4 I became obsessed with a book {can not remember the name} where the little boy falls into a bottle of milk and becomes naked. In the book he is floating nude and you see his penis. My mom said for the longest time I would always want her to read me the book and stop at that page. I wouldn't worry about the barbie's either. Most of mine stayed naked. I wonder why that is? Maybe because they are so hard to dress.

The book you're talking about is called In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak. :)

  • Alright thanks for your input all.  I guess I'll let it go and if things get out of control then I'll worry.

Of course, I used to undress my barbies all the time, but I also don't remember having barbies when I was 4.

  • She will feed off of your reaction, so just pass it off as no big deal and move along.

Last year I took C & A to a softball game with me one evening.  Lo and behold as we are driving down 75/85 in the thick of rush hour we see tons of flashing blue lights.  Turns out a woman was walking down 75/85 during rush hour naked as a jay bird.  As luck would have it, just as we are passing by her (we are in the lane closest to her), she turns around, gives everyone a full frontal view and yells profanities and gives everyone the finger.

What to say to my kids who were full of questions after that one?  I just reminded them that the "lady" should have put on clothes before she left the house and that it's was very dangerous for her to be walking in the highway.

I didn't make a big deal out of it, and although they bring it up from time to time, I don't make nudity a taboo, and they think nothing more of it. All of Ava's barbies have lost their clothes as well and at that age, it's just innocent play.

Yes! I just ordered Jackson a copy. I loved that book and not just for the peep show. Thanks!
