At what age do/did you stop using the monitor?

Just wondering what age most people stop listening to their children on a monitor every night. I am very attached to mine and have ours on in Gracie's room every night. When I am gone for the evening, DH never uses one and he laughs me for running to get it every night as soon as I put her to bed.

  • Probably when he's old enough to realize he needs us (bad dreams, sick, etc.) and will get out of bed to find us. Right now he's still too befuddled to get up when he wakes in the night. He'll sit there any cry till you come in and I'm not confident that I'll hear him from his room with his door shut. I know for a FACT DH won't. So I'm not sure. Another year maybe?

Really, I'll probably get rid of it when I'm confident that he could coherently come get us if he needed us in the night--threw up, had a bad dream, etc. It'll be a while, because like you, I'm very attached to it. Plus, I love looking at his sweet self sleeping.

  • Right now our rooms are right next to each other so when she needs something, she gets out of bed, comes to her door and calls for us. We mostly just use the monitor to see if she's asleep or messing around in her room.

If her room is further away when we move, we'll either start listening to her room again (if DS's room is closer) or have both receivers on in the room. Or I suppose we could start opening her door but I'm not sure if she could sleep with it open.

  • I stopped using it with DD when we moved her to her big girl room/bed around 26 months. at that point she could get out of her room if she wanted and come into our room.

This.  Our rooms are close enough that we can hear both kids and we keep all the doors open, but they come get us when they need us.

  • Um, A is 6 and we still use the monitor. Embarrassed  Her room is upstairs and the other side of the house from ours though.  She also used to suffer from nigh terrors so I definitely kept it on and around.  Now, I only turn it on once I go to bed (not when I'm right at the bottom of the stairs in the family room.  I probably don't really need it now because she could come and get us, but I'm paranoid about sleepy kids and stairs so she only comes down to our room  in the mornings when she wakes before us not when she wakes at night (which is hardly ever now anyway).
