Any ideas on how to get DS to sleep longer in morning?

He has always been a really crappy sleeper. Up mult times during the night every night. We decided 2 wks ago to drop the morning nap. A few nights later he is now STTN. Yay!! He goes to bed at 7:30pm and sleeps until 5:00 or 5:30. This has happened almost everyday now for the past week. I am so happy that he is finally sleeping all night but the prob is when he wakes up this early we have to bring the am nap back. I have no idea what to do. His DD goes to bed at the same time but she doesn't fall asleep until around 8pm. She gets up at 6:30-7 if i don't wake her before then. She has always been a good sleeper though. DS is so tired by 7:30 that he falls asleep as soon as i put him to bed. We kept him up until 8pm with her and he still woke up but we only did that one night.

Any ideas? They are in daycare full time now. My DCP has no problem putting just him down for a short nap in the morning but he won't always go in the alotted time. If we wait until after 10am it ruins his afternoon nap.

Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks!!

  • I'm not really sure there's much you can do.  Some kids just don't sleep late in the mornings.

  • Whenever DS wakes at that hour, I treat it like a night waking. I nurse him still at that hour (but when I wean I'd probably offer some milk or water), keep lights off, don't change his diaper (unless it's poop or really, really wet), don't talk to him, etc, and put him back in and he'll go back to sleep for another hour or so. It helps that it's still dark out at that time. When he wakes closer to 7 and it's light I can't always trick him to going back to bed for awhile. :P

  • Just deal with it for now, the time changes in about 8 weeks and then it will be later :)

  • You could try pushing his bedtime a little later but that may or may not change his wake time. If he's not screaming (or maybe even if he is depending on your tolerance level), I would leave him in his room until the time you want him to get up (maybe work towards this gradually) and see if that helps him sleep longer.

  • If you leave him in his crib, will he fall back to sleep? If he just started STTN, he might stretch this out after awhile. DS sleeps until 7 or so on days that we're home and he doesn't have to get up for school, but when he first started STTN, he got up at 4.

  • My son has always been a horrible sleeper as well.  I actually decided to try what is often recommended when they are infants.  I moved his bedtime up by 30 minutes and now he's sleeping later in the morning.  He used take a bath at 7:30 (asleep by 8:15 or so) and he would wake up between 5 & 5:30.  Now he goes up for a bath (asleep around 7:45) and he sleeps until 6 or 6:30.  I wasn't sure what would happen when I tried this, but it seems to have worked for us (at least for now, it's only been 2 weeks).
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!
